how quickly would you ? possible difficult subject

I lost a 5yr old 30 years ago and said I'd never even sit on a horse again. That lasted 3 weeks, until someone asked me to ride his brother for them.

9 yrs ago I had my 34yr old boy pts, but also had my 7yo mare to look after, otherwise I might have tried to give up again.

Last year I also lost that mare (15 at the time). I started looking 4 weeks after, and got my new boy 6 months after I lost her.

If it's part of your life, it's practically impossible to be without a horse for long.

ETA: It took me almost two years to have another cat in my home.

Some people, like myself, find getting a new horse, rabbit, guinea pig, for e.g, helps them to cope with the loss of a friend/pet, I find it helps to heal the broken heart.
I didn't replace my last Guinea pig who passed last december, and deeply regret not doing so, as I grieved for months, with nothing to distract me, it was all I could focus on. Yes I have 4 others, but watching them run around without her... :(

I work at a vets and there is no right or wrong answer to this question.

Personally, I feel that you don't stop loving the one you have lost but you have a lot of love to give and you can still love another ( who is on this earth ). This is not meant as disrespect but after I lost my beloved dog I was ready to end it all and it was a rescue dog who gave me a reason to carry on

Everyone is different and also depends on the circumstances. A planned PTS when a horse is coming to the end of his natural lifespan or has a longterm illness that has reached a point where there is no further treatment may be easier to come to terms with and plan ahead. Whilst making the decision you will grieve and by th etime it is done it may even be a relief.

If it is sudden and it is a great shock then it's likely to take longer to get over because your brain has to completely readjust its expectations.

I think I will feel like dying when my boy goes and I'll probably take to my bed tbh - but that is me.
