How sellable are arabs?

I bought a purebred arab last year for a steal...he had been shown successfully and done very little else....fantastic bloodlines.

I've spent a year bringing him on....hacks out lovely- I'm turing him into a 'proper' riding horse rather than a show arab....although he could quite easily show again.....

....I could easily sell him at a profit....and I've been asked to do so ....but I won't part with the bugger, he's a keeper.

You have to factor in 'admiration time' when you hack an arab out.....I've had people pull up and stop me and ask about his breeding, bus drivers, joggers, people gardening, ....all stop to admire him....he loves it.

You will always be able to sell a ridden arab on....to me if no-one else:D

Aw i bet he's gorgeous, I already get the talking and people asking me stuff whilst im out and about coz my girls a spotty (a pretty one :p) so we quite often get asked questions or people want to stroke her!

That's good to know that they are reasonably easy to sell on, what's there jumping like? i've heard mixed stuff, from cant jump to save there life to being super scopey and quick..

yes!
totally looking for a ridden arab within the future, there doesn't seem to be many about though - plently of youngsters or older horses in their 17s+ but nothing inbetween :(

They are prefectly capable of jumping...they just have to think its a good idea:rolleyes:

I'm not sure that most people who have young arabs do any groundwork for jumping- as in polework etc- if they are concentrating on showing. Mine certainly hadn't seen a pole and it took ages to get him to step over one....

He's now doing small x-poles and popping the odd log out hacking but we're taking it slowly.

Theres some people on here who do XC and SJ on arabs.....if you do a thread search on arabs it will probably pull up some photos.:)

Yes, my mare has got a really scopey jump and at one point was training at 1m - 1.05m easily and its very comfy, you sort of feel like your floating over them.

However I will say she isnt always consistant with her jumping, one day she'll jump double clears, and the next day she'd rather ditch you, lol, but thats just her quirkyness and personality and me forgetting to keep her together!!! :)

Midi - give me a year I shall get you your ridden Arab (if I buy him)

I know with most other horses geldings are less opinionated than mares, is this the same for Arabs? I've always considered them to need treating like you would a mare "ask not tell"...?

I think well schooled sane sensible ridden arabs are very easy to sell but definately be aware that once you've got him you probably won't want to!!! My only word of caution as I know nothing about you or your experience is that they can be very easily ruined in the wrong hands so you do have to be a very calm laid back type of person in my opinion. Hence why there are so many "difficult" arabs out there. I've got a mare and a gelding and my gelding is definatley the easier but I love my mare best but she is one who definately could have been a disaster in the wrong hands. Very sensitive hot and feisty but is now hacking out beautifully and doing a decent dressage test. Will teach her to jump at some point but it's not my forte! Good luck hope you like him and we get to see pictures when you get him.

My friend's 14.3hh chestnut Arab is arriving this weekend: an all rounder who's been purchased for a song. Her friend (that's soon to be his ex-owner) has used him as a confidence builder as he is rather unshakeable. Sounds like she's grabbed a bargain! lol.

Don't know about saleable, my arab x knabstrupper ended up on loan for the winter receiving some additional dressage schooling but then I didn't try very hard to sell her I guess. I'll try properly in the spring!

super sellable to the right poeple! They're just the best - I've had arabs who are amazing jumpers, and find that it's dressage they struggle with once you get to elementary or omre (not built for collection) but otherwise you can do anything with them, race, hunt, endurance, riding club stuff, team chase, SJ, etc etc. They're always up for anything and interested, and super fun if you're the sort of person that likes them. I think in recent years the demand has massively increased - they used to sell for little compared wiht similar size and ability breeds, but not anymore. If he's in the hundreds as you say i'd definitely definitely go ahead if you like him!

My beautiful palomino arab x hanovarian mare we have had her up for sale, although not trying desperately hard as we want her to go to the perfect home, but every one has came out to see her loves her temperment and thinks she is lovely, however they cannot ride her! she is a sensitive well schooled horse, and you push the wrong buttons and she wont work for you at all doesnt do anything nasty but they just feel she is going to run off when she wont. but i love her to bits and wont be trying to sell her now until next year as we have loads of hunts and shows planned for the winter and try sell her again next year, people are exspecting a lovely horse for nothing!

Well he wasnt the one, I'm not going into any details so openly (pm me if you really want to know) he was gorgeous, but there was no spark for me and a few things concerned me

Its a shame but I am not devastated as it were, Im a pretty calm, quiet rider as my mare is pretty sensitive and can be a nightmare ridden by the wrong person (that is why she'll never leave me nor will anyone else ride her.)

I just cannot seem to find anything right now, everything is either to young, or to expensive.. like 14.2hh-15.2hh unbroken 3/4 year olds are going for £1500!! I cannot afford much over £800 but will persevere with my search:D Oh and i live in cornwall so my market is cut right in half and then in half again!!
