How sinister does this lump look?

Found this on BBP this morning. It’s really hard to get an impression in a photograph but it’s right up between his inner thighs, so that if you just pull his tail aside you can’t see it, it’s only when his hind legs are splayed apart or if you run your hand right into the crease between his hind legs. It’s not just the big nodular ‘double lump’ that sits over the vein, the skin around it also feels disturbed and lumpy for a few inches around it up into the crease in the area I have marked. My brain is telling me this could be a big problem due to the size and location, friction etc.

Im not having the best of times with my ponies, rising 2yo with a ruptured tendon above the hock and BBP with displacement colic last weekend. Was dicy but he has bounced back to brilliant form over the week so I’m feeling deflated to have only noticed this today. He has had two occult sarcoids treated with a laser about 8 years ago on his thigh and sheath but they were straightforward, healed perfectly and no trace of anything where they had been.

I would want a vet to look at that.

Sorry that you are having such a tough time with your horses, I hope that they both fully recover and that the lump isn't a big deal.

Oh yes I’ll definitely be getting it looked at by the vet. Think I’m running up quite the bill this winter!

Looks like sarcoids could be a few close together one of my geldings had similar in the same place, they did go away on there own and haven't returned.

Same here until 14 years later when it suddenly grew back very aggressively ... Annoyingly, I was with the same insurance and they decided as it was the same site that the vet had previously noted the sarcoid, it would still be excluded. Had to have it laser removed.

I suppose there is always a chance they can return to the same area and then it won't be covered by insurance bloody unlucky ?

The inner thigh is a common site for sarcoids...

If the lumps are indeed sarcoids, they might band off, which is a relatively cheap and simple fix.

This sarcoid dropped off overnight post banding, the site is healing up really well. This is a complicated situ though as she has others close by inc a flat sarcoid close to her stifle.

A Prof K opinion costs less than £100 - vet sends off photos to him for assessment.

Did you treat it at all? How difficult is it in that location with the friction between the hind legs?

It was banded and never caused an issue again as far as I'm aware, she was sold on a few years after and I heard about her throw the grapevine from time to time and never knew of it to cause her any problems again.

I agree it looks like sarcoids and needs a vet check. So sorry you're having issues but good that you've noticed while they are still small. Hope your luck changes soon.

Is there a link between mental stress and sarcoids? I bought a very anxious horse with a sarcoid, who got another in the first 6 months of ownership, but once she finally settled down, they went away and have not come back ( touches wood!)
