How soon after gelding is he safe to go out with mares?

New horse moved onto our yard at the weekend. He was gelded in January and there are a lot of differing opinions amongst the liveries as to when he'll be safe to turn out with the girlies. Some say 6 weeks, some say 6 months!

He's 3 and a half years old and it's not known whether or not he's actually ever been used as a stud.

Many thanks!

Everyone's opinions will differ on this matter, but 2 months is plenty in my opinion. In the entire stallion, every 57 days, a new wave of sperm would come through to the warehousing section of the testes/reproductive tract, and all the old ones would have been absorbed, or chucked out in the urine by that point (or ejaculated during masturbation)... so the chances of there being anything in there after 2 months is virtually zero.

The only other thing will be his behaviour - some will show stallion-like behaviour for longer than that time... so it's just down to you/your friend to see how he behaves. If he shows stallion-like behaviour still, and starts trying to mount the mares, then you might want to give him a little longer

Hope that helps
