I have had a 4 year old mare for 5 months now and I am schooling on flat and jump work with her and she is coming on nicely. She is very mareish and naps when out alone, although this is improving. I want to start taking her to clinics and local shows to get her used to being around other horses and in strange situations as my intention is to event at a local level in the future.

Is it too soon to start taking her to schooling clinics and local shows, not competing just showing her the environment she will be in, I don't want to put her in a situation where she may lose her confidence, but I have no idea when the right time is to start taking her.

There is a local flatwork clinic in a couple of weeks which i'm thinking of taking her to do you think this is too soon?

I don't think its too soon, my boy was 4 last year and he did a couple of clinic's early in the year. Just take it quietly and make sure they are aware that its her first outing, so they can give you some more room if you need it. My boy came on loads for it.

Have fun!

I took my four year out last Monday to her first clinic, it was interesting certainly increased her energy levels but was a good experience, if you feel its too soon maybe hire an arena away from home for your lesson this is good as there are not so many other horses around, but different sights and sound to introduce them too, good luck and have fun.

I took mine out to a show donw the road as a 3 yr old for a look round and a walk round the arena. They do come on loadas but bear in mind it will be all a bit mind blowing for them so dont expect too much.
