Can horses sense things, like ghostly stuff?

I went out for a ride on Axey this morning and he was fab, until we got to the field that goes underneath The Long Man

He started getting very stressed and tense, he was dripping in sweat and we literally jogged the whole way across the field, feeling like a coiled spring, he does this every time we go across there, even if we are going away from home.
I can only assume he can sense something there, he was completely quiet as soon as we got out of the gate the other side and he was fine before.
Is it known for being haunted or anything?

I have wondered things like this before - my mare used to be really funny about a big grave yard we used to ride by in Milton Keynes - she would never go too close to it - she was fine until we got close and then would go side ways, snort and get worked up and sweaty....... very strange as part of one of our fields goes behind a church and grave yard now and she does not have a problem at all...... none of our horses do!! ??

We will never know how their minds work!!

hmm that is odd, i no merlin my IDx can be as cool as a cucumber in the heavest traffic but when we go through a part of some woods on a bridle path he becomes really tense, i've always put this down to deer creeping about in the undergrowth, but it might not be...?!

I remember when we first went to that yard I was hacking back alon gthe bottom of the long man and murphy and the horse I was with suddenly went from a real plod to a flat out bolt upthe side of the long man. Was very scary and when we finally stopped them they were sweating and shaking!!!
There is also a path that goes towards buts brow that is nick named hang mans alley and every horse I have ridden through there walks through really fast but once through they are fine!!!! Spooky!!!
