Dammit if you say yes to the 1st three how can you say no to the last one?

I didn't, LOL!! I said yes to all of them, as I have the same thought-process as you apparently

I put yes to the first three. Gingermare sums up perfectly my thinking.

I once in error travelled Miss Delia with a dead bird in the trailer - she was very upset and took ages to get over it and lots of work on getting her to load again.

Mine know how to get treats - Cairo raises a front leg and Chancers wiggles his nose.

Yes horses know people who have hurt them in the past. My old TB would flinch at the sight of anyone who looked like her old owner - tall, dark haired and male.

I would never normally hit a horse as a delayed reaction, but if it was a bugger that knew that bucking removed the rider and it took me time to catch up with it afterwards, it would have a wack.

If a horse stopped at a jump and was hit for it a minute later it surely would understand why it was being told off, as horses must know that it's not acceptable to stop at a jump?!
Also horses must know that its unacceptable to bite someone too, so even if you were hopping about in pain for 5 mins before you smacked it, it would still be aware of biting you.

When I was doing my training I had to look after the YO horse which was a right evil, bad tempered mare. One day I was grooming her and she turned round and bit me really hard on my arm, so hard I nearly passed out and felt sick. I ran out of the stable to sit down and YO came round the corner and saw me, and took me to treat my injury.
However a good 15 mins after this he went into the horses stable with a whip and beat her

to teach her a lesson.
Poor horse, not surprised she was evil.

QR.

I answered yes to all but the last one which I think is a maybe, and I think it depends on whether the horse knows it has been naughty or not.

If a horse stops at a fence, out of disobedience, then I think they know they have been naughty. Obviously a smack should be administered ASAP afterwards, but its not always necessarily possible in some circumstances.

If the horse doesn't know its done something wrong, and you smack it 5 minutes later, then I personally think it won't have any idea what its being punished for.
