How tall are you and how big is your horse?

However, this is a pertinent question, OP. My homebred lightweight short coupled 15.2hh sports horse type mare has bounced back to me off loan, and I'm wondering whther she'd take me if I go down to 10st . I'd have to shoehorn my arse into her compact 17" jump saddle, as she can't take a larger saddle, and her ears would seem very close up cf my IDx .

She'd carry you now no problem!

I'm 5'3 and my lovely mare is 14.3hh. I feel like she is the perfect size for me. I certainly don't feel comfortable on anything bigger than 15hh. I'm petite so I can in theory ride small ponies but a 13.2, unless it's very chunky, feels too small.

So basically, I feel happiest on ponies/horses between 14-15hh. :)

I’m 5ft 9 horse is 16.2 he’s a warmblood x tb and just right for me.
I like big draught horses. My grandad had Shires and I have always wanted one, but I never feel comfortable riding big wide horses.

I'm a 5'8 guy and my mare is 16.1 and gelding is 16.2. I used to feel too big for my mare but she is eight this year and seems to have come in from her winter break bigger and stronger so now I feel fine on her. Anything smaller than 16h and I would want to get on it!

plenty of saddle models about with upswept panels ;)

my first horse (a very compact lusitano) was like sitting on a cliff. I am quite long in the torso so some people said I was too big for him (he was 15.1h) and it certainly taught me to sit up lol. He could jump like a cat but I never really felt brave enough due to the neck thing. My 13.2h Fell has way more in front of him than he did-actually more than some bigger horses so he feels completely fine in that respect and he can take a bigger saddle as well.

5'6 and my recently retired boy was 17'2" and I am saving up to buy a purebred Clydie. I rarely feel right on anything under 16'3" but that might be because I learned on an ex police horse and had lessons on a 17'3" IDH so ti just feels right to me.

5'9 and 14.2hh. Bought when I was 15, I've grown a bit since then but he takes up the leg well! Next one will be 15.2hh-16hh. I've been riding quite a few different types of horses recently, and whilst I quite like novelty of a big horse for lesson or so, I am definitely far more comfortable on smaller more compact horses, I find big horses harder to keep together and manoeuvre, plus the tacking up rugs etc is more of a chore!

I am 5'4 and 10 stone and have a 14.2hh pony and a 15.2hh welsh cob cross. The pony is actually the strongest to ride, she is a short backed, stocky type.

5ft 6 My riddens are 14hh highland, 16hh ID X, 16.3 maxi cob and 17.1hh ish. I ride quite a few for other people ranging from 12.3hh section c to an 18hh ex cavalry gelding

That's a lovely horse Oldie! You look just right on him. I think you're right about the build, I'm around 7st2 at the moment so I probably would look silly on a big horse!

For me it's less about the actual riding and more about the day to day, changing rugs, trying to bridle up etc.

That's why I got my little cob lad. Although I say I am 4' 10'' , I have probably shrunk a bit with age! I would have liked a 14.1h but too big to tack up and handle.

Shirl

I know what you mean, my Asha is like that, and always held her neck low. Galloping was the worst, as there was nothing at all in front. My new girl has a much more normal head carriage, its so much nicer to ride.

Im 5ft 6, and pip is a smidge over 16.1. I feel very comfy on her.

5'4 and my two are 17.3 and 16.1
Also ride ponies for people, anything from 12hh-16hh
Much prefer riding big horses

I'm 5'6" (and a half) and he's a smidge under 17hh. Unfortunately he takes up my leg so we look like the Thelwell cartoons.

I'm 5ft 7.5, I don't feel comfortable riding anything less than 15.3, and then it has to be a chunkier sort. I have ridden my friends 14.2 heavy cob for her once or twice, but it did feel a little unnerving having the ground so close!
Felt most comfortable on my 16hh shirex mare who was big enough but not so huge. She was bang on perfect for me, I don't like riding really tall horses as I think it can be like steering a steam train!

I'm just shy of 5ft5, and about 8/8.5 stone. Henry measures in at 16.2hh but everyone says he looks bigger, he is 3/4 ID so pretty chunky. I definitely look a bit small on him in some photos, but he seems to cope with me giving aids halfway up his ribs and he's so chilled and easy to deal with on the ground that sometimes I forget he's so big! It took me a while to get used to the size of his strides, but getting there now! My last horse was a relatively fine 15.2/3hh warmblood type, and she was the perfect size for me :) I've ridden all sorts for other people though, from 12hh to a 17.3hh Shire X :o

I’m 5’11 and ride a 16hh and a 14hh, I look about the same on both as the 14hh is a barrel and the 16hh is similar build to a national hunt Tb. I prefer riding the 16hh though and I think if I was to buy again that would be my minimum height.

I've found this thread very interesting and have come to the conclusion that it's not just size of the horse and rider, it's the conformation of both taken together. The pic is of a rider who is 5'9" riding a 14.2hh connie x. The pony is not that chunky and the rider, though tall is very long hip to knee and not overly tall from the waist up. Pony can only take a 16.5 saddle but it was made cut forward enough to take up the length of the thigh.

Same rider on a 16.2 WBx

5,1ft and have a 14hh highland.
I ride anything from 11hh upwards as I'm fairly slight... for now!

But I love getting on a "real" horse, although galloping full thunder on a Shire was different to say the least!

I am another 'long leg' person who makes everything look tiny, I'm 5'7 but I find no matter what height I ride I akways look tall on it. Even a 17.3 shire horse didn't look too big lol.
I have a 14hh pony and 15.2 angloarab they are both quite fine and dainty.

What an amazing combo - who is that Oldie?

What an amazing combo - who is that Oldie?

My daughter, taken a few years ago when she was 15. She'd had the connie x as a five year old and in the pic he's 9. He was a bit of a handful in the early days but turned out to be absolutely brilliant and he gave her so much and became a wonderful schoolmaster to other children. The chestnut is a Ricardo Z gelding, bought rising 6. If I remember correctly this was at their first event. She had a season competing them both but was out of ponies at 15 as she has a December birthday, so the pony was moved on but we never lost touch with him.

My last boy was a smidge under 18.1hh (I got him at 6 and he was still growing!) and I am 5'7.5 and I think I actually made him look quite small.

He was a medium saddle when I first got him too, but an XW after about 9 months of muscling up so not finely built!

I am about 5 feet tall however very slim. My horse is 14.2hh and I love him to bits, however he does have quite a chunky build. He has a good thick neck, short legs, short neck, large torso, big butt and a massive chest. He resembles a quarter horse greatly. I have actually broken in many Arabians and a couple brumbies here and there which are all 14.3hh or under. I also personally like the smaller horses, the taller horses are too much effort sometimes, they're harder to get onto, they're harder to groom, their feet are heavier to pick out and of course, there's further to fall. I've also always found that the smaller horses tend to have more spunk and personality. It doesn't look ridiculous to be an adult on a 14hh horse, if it was bad then reining would not exist. Just do what you want and what makes you comfortable!

You actually look really good on him, present a nice picture IMO :) Very handsome horse too.

5ft 4ins and 15.2 but have owned/ridden smaller most of my life. I like small, zippy animals with pony minds (the sort that are always plotting your downfall).
