Ickle pony was getting PTS by the hunt yesterday at my yard because hes got chronic liver failure (he is 26). He was led to the field etc, and the thing jammed and it couldnt be done.

Isnt that the most awful thing ever???

I couldnt bear it if it had happened to me, they are coming back to do it today.

I feel the same - heart goes to the poor owners. Hopefully pony is not aware at all.
 
That is awful, my heart goes out to the owners. Similar thing happened to me many years ago. Vet came out for 3rd time to pony with really bad colic (I had phoned him and told him I didn't think she would make it). He didn't have enough drugs to inject her, and hadn't got his gun with him

. He went to the practice to get gun and she had died before he returned. I changed vets shortly afterwards.
 
Pretty harrowing.

We had an old pony PTS in April. He'd had recurring bouts of colic, and this particular one was really really bad. He was down for about 3 hours and finally the decision was made... He was much happier within himself once we'd all decided, but still down. The man and gun appeared and the little chap decided he'd like to go with some dignity and managed to haul himself to his feet (legs were all wobbling mind). Talk about fresh floods of tears...

I hope it goes without a hitch today.

ETA Babybells, does it REALLY matter why the pony's being shot and why the hunt are having it?
 
To the OP, I have to say it would have been worse had the captive bolt partially worked, I'd have thought the pony knew very little about the intentions when he was led out into the field. Horrible for the owners though.

babybells - OP states WHY pony is being pts. As for why by the hunt, I can only speculate but choose one or some of the following: experienced and professional at the job, sympathetic to pony and owner, pony loved hunting and will have a last run with hounds, cost effective, can do the job exactly as requested, most ecologically sound - I'm sure there are loads of others but I expect you can find one there you empathise with.

It wasnt meant to be a debate about ways of PTS, and thankyou to everyone who has supported the hunt way.

As most people have said - the way it is done is personal choice, the hunt being an very valid option. Of course it would depend on circumstances that you are in at the time. Luckily it is not a decision we have to make very often.
 
i would never send mine to the hunt! and i defo wouldnt have mine shot! .. my girl was pts by injection and it seemed more peaceful
 
Well that is your choice, others choose differently. I have had one PTS by injection and five shot over the years, by both the hunt and by the Knacker firm who come out and would always choose the latter two options (Hunt and knacker firm)
 
And I would always send mine to the hunt and would never have mine PTS by injection - it is all about personal choice!

As someone said above, I am sure the pony had absolutely no idea what was going to happen, and I do hope today goes smoothly for them.
 
though saying that there was a thread recently that most people experience of injection was peaceful- one owner who had her pony PTS was quite upset- incases like this- let there be no judgement!
Its hard enough without people second guessing ESPECIALLY when people are doing the best for the animal having it PTS
 
When PTS is kindest option, it's a brave choice however it's done, personal pref, shot, much faster, was there to support freind who had one pts by injection and it fought to stay concious all the way.

i would rather have any shot as with drugs they can fight and if you have ever seen this you would agree it is very upsetting and disturbing and if they fight for a very long time they can also be in a lot of pain another vote for the knaker man
 
Firstly I am so sorry to hear this, but pony would not have realised what was going on. When Breeze was pts by the hunt in the field - she had broken her leg, he was fantastic and spent ages feeding her polos until she was completely relaxed (she was wary of men) and went as she should - ears pricked and forward and no fear.

I used the hunt as they are professional, do this all the time, Breeze would have fought to stay up against drugs - that sort of horse.

Breeze had spent many happy years hunting with them and my personal view is that going to the hunt was a fitting end for an old hunter. To be once dead, the spirit is gone and I personally would be happy to go to the hounds if it were my body.

Very distressing for you, but am sure all will go fine next time and pony will be at peace.

I am sorry to hear things didnt go well for Ikle pony, I do hope it goes alot smoother today & Pony would not have known what was going on.
 
Pony had an unsceduled trip to the field, even in pain, if your weather was as good as ours, it probably appreciated the change of scenery, it will have had no knowledge beyond that. Often these things are a lot harder on the owners than horses.

That is pretty awful and I do feel for all concerned. I once held a friend's pony while it was shot which was horrible but the knackerman turned up over an hour late which was terrible. Friend and I had both psyched ourselves up for a 12 noon appointment and the waiting just made it worse and worse.
