For the first time this year I have given George a chaser clip with all his neck off (the first year I had him he had a bib and belly and no clip last year) as we are doing a bit more work now. This has got me wondering if I have got a thick enough rug???

George is fairly well covered

and doesn't lose much weight over the winter and eats like an um horse

. He is also out during the day and in at the night. I don't use stable rugs, just turnouts and the thickest rug I have is a high neck 250g. Bearing in mind I am in Essex so it doesn't get mega cold, but do you think I should have a thicker rug or is this ok?

Thanks

if i were you, i would get something slightly thicker, and maybe with a neck cover, as you have clipped his neck. you may find that he is fine for now, but once the temp drops, he will need an extra bit of warmth. x

I would think it is OK particularly if he is fairly well covered. I tend to think we think our horses are colder than they are.

Obviously you will know if he is cold (he doesn't have to or want to be hot) in which case you would need a heavier weight rug.

I have one out with just a bib clip who is unrugged and one with a chaser who has a 300g rug on.

I think Id put something a tad toastier on him, id rather he was cosy than find he dips in weight & you have to feed him up especially if the temp does drop.

Can you attach a neck cover to his current rug? The rug weight seems fine, just think he would benefit from having his neck covered if you cut all his fur off!

My heaviest rugs are 200g and i fully clip mine and they live out, i only added one underrug to one pony last year when we had all the bad snow, the rest of the time they were toasty all the time.

Mine do have full neck rugs though as i feel they can lose a lot of heat thru their necks when fully clipped especially if they have shorter manes as well rather than big thick curtains - LOL

My mare is fully clipped and is still in her 250 rug with neck. I do have a heavier one but she's fine at the moment, i chech her in the morning and at night and she's really warm

me too

you can always put a fleece under neath if you do find he is cold. Or if you really want you can buy a full neck rug. If you only have one 250g then I would probably buy another 250g full neck then put something under it. You would get more use out of it then, and have a spare if it was too wet to put on

She has a huge array of heavyweight rugs but not needed them yet this year
