How tight should new leather riding boots be?

Well if the hat issues weren't bad enough, have now come home to find that my bleeding boots I have ordered online (2 different pairs) don't fit! Rubber pair is too tall and digs in at the back of my knee and I can't even get the leather pair past my calves which I find odd because Im not big (have defined calves but nothing out of the ordinary), in fact the rubber ones are very loose around my calf.

Is this something I should expect with leather and just try to pull them on. They have two strong loops inside to pull them on so that suggests to me they might be a pain to get on until they supple up.

Any suggestions appreciated.

No I have just got two old skinny waist belts out of the wardrobe that I am going to attempt to pull them on with using plastic bags to make the job a little smoother. Could try gel insoles in the rubber ones as there is plenty of room spare in the foot space. After putting on my jodphurs the rubber ones are a snug fit so leather ones will be even tighter now :S

Check the sizing guide for the leather as should give you a calf measurement and if you measure your calves with a tape measure and compare. Leather does stretch and you can encourage that along but if they are very tight, they may too uncomfortable to wear so would send back.

I think I am beyond the stage of returning them, reckon I will be sleeping in them tonight and wearing them to work tomorrow haa

got the boot off using my futon slats and a wooden spoon, safe to say I wont be trying them on again without using a stretcher or something, theyre painfully tight

My Broginis cut my circulation off when i bought them, just a few days of walking round the house though and they stretched perfectly, you just have to go through the pain/numb barrier - LOL!

Don't think i'd ever buy pull on leather boots though to be honest, at least with zips you can do them up a stage at a time, i used bootlaces through the zip pulls to get them up slowly. Very comfy boots now though.

I sent my broginis to a place in Kent to stretch them. £20 to stretch with fast free postage. I was very happy! Can't temeber name but if you google riding boot repairs stretching Kent it will come up x

I dont think they will stretch as much as I need them to tbh. Considering having a leathersmith or someone similar add gussets to them. No idea where I would find one round here (Ironbridge) though... best get searching :)

Most saddlers will put gussets in boots.
If you got them on they should stretch enough, have you tried wearing them with just pop sox ?

I didn't think mine would either but as I was quoted £100 to fit a gusset I figured it was worth a shot! They got about 2.5 inch stretch out of then at least, if anything they are now just a bit too wide! Worth giving them a call and seeing if they can help maybe.

When I tried them on I only had long thin socks with plastic bags over to ease the process, unless I invest in a boot jack then I wont be trying them on again as I have scuffed them at the back when trying to get the boot off, nothing major but I don't want to do it again and ruin them.

If they will stretch 2.5" then I think that will be enough, will get them sent off then :)

Thanks for help everyone.
