ok, anyone on here share a horse/ pony?
have just sold my girl , and would love to find a pony to hack around the countryside on a friday in my area( bucklebury, berks)
just wondering what experiences anyone else has had, and what type of agreement is made. is it normally financial, or duties done etc?
any advice gratefully received.

when i have had sharers in the past i charged
£25 per week for 3days riding of there choice, one girl did friday sat and sun which i didn't mind and the other one i had before her did a mixture according to which shift she was working. they were expected to do my horses as they would their own, so they fed, mucked out, turn out, did feeds and haynets, brought in, changed rugs and rode if they wanted to. i did insist that if they didn't ride they informed me as i always gave my horse a day off a week so i they didn't ride then i needed to make sure i did on my 4 days

I shared Blaze with her owner for two days a week before I bought her. I paid £25 and had sole charge of her for those two days, doing everything.
I think it works well if the sharer and owner have very similar views on horse management and if you both thoroughly discuss the details before commencing the share, rather than wait until a problem arises. I think the BHS have a pro-forma agreement on their site. it may be worth having a look at that to give you some ideas.

PP - are there any horses to share in your neck of the woods? Maybe someone on here will have a neddy that they need a hand with.

As debsg, the BHS has something, I haven't looked on their site, but I did become a member just before Christmas (I should look at the site!

I share. Depending on the person you'll get more/less. Toby's kept at livery at a friends so I don't have to do any work apart from feeding/changing rugs/tack cleaning when I ride him. His owner works full time so during the holidays, I'm allowed to ride him whenever I like during the week. She is also a keen traveler and I'm allowed to 'help myself' to him whenever I like when she's away. During school term time, I ride about 2 times a week-- Once after school, sometimes on a thursday, sometimes on a friday. And then once at the weekend-- the time/day differs depending on when the other owner rides. She sometimes goes out clubbing or whatever so she may ride later on and I'll ride earlier. Each week one of us will either text to confirm arrangements each week to be sure. Toby's very good in the sense that because he's getting on a bit, it doesn't matter how many times he's ridden, he'll still be okay to ride. My dad pays[part of my 'maintainence' money from my rents divorce] £30 a week and I'm allowed to do pony club and various activities as long as I can get transport.

I bought a horse with a friend and we share all costs 50/50. I get to ride her at weekends in the winter and early in the mornings in the summer no one else will get up at 5am and come riding with me).
In the winter I get up and feed the horses at 6.30 and put their outside rugs on. OH turns them out, the sharer mucks both horses out on week days and I do weekends, and OH puts them in on an evening. OH and I share the late night check.
The sharer gets to ride during the week when her kids are at school, she then has her weekends for her family. As I work full time it works well for us

Wow this makes my deal seem really good for my rider!!

I have somone ride my horse a couple of days a week, when they do so they catch in,muck out and ride. I ask for no financial contribution, I see it that they are doing me a favour. Having someone who cared for my horse and schooled to a high level was much more important than money to me. I couldn't be without her!!

When I was horseless, I went to a yard where I could just ride the horses, no mucking out or anything. The owner would often tack them up for me aswell, I think I was very lucky to find that place though.

I'd say it depends on who is doing whom the bigger favour.

If you are a seriously good rider, you could probably charge someone to school/exercise their horse. I occasionally pay a 7 stone instructor friend of mine to school any naughty ponies or help me get one fit.

If you are an average/good rider and prepared to ride anything, then you should be able to find someone who needs their horse exercised mid-week and the arrangement would be mutually beneficial, and maybe you would be expected to do that day's skipping out or bring in from the field and feed, but no money would change hands.

If you are not so experienced, there are relatively few horses in your area, if you could only ride a schoolmaster or want to compete at weekends, then you should be paying them a contribution, but how much depends on the horse and facilities.

That's what I would expect, anyway

I've shared a couple of horses and each time the owner has seen it as mutually beneficial so I didn't have to contribute anything. As I'm a bit of a weirdo that actually prefers looking after horse to riding them I usually took over the stable I usually rode a couple of times a week.

I will say that if you aren't paying anything you really don't have any say at all in what the horse does or how it is managed. I gave up sharing one horse because I couldn't bring myself to follow the owners way of doing things (basically just let the horse do whatever it wants including bite, run off, refuse to go into the school etc). If you can get it a loan is so much better!

If you do go for a share, agree a trial period first and make sure you and the owner are of one mind!
