We are going to sell our equestrian property and down-size in the near future. I have three horses and due to moving, needing livery and starting a full time job will only be able to keep one.

I have a 21 year old t.b mare who is wonderful, sound and does everything still.

A 7 year old t.b mare who has great potential to go on and event and is doing fantastically well.

An 18 mth arab filly.

I have to choose one, I love them all equally. If you could give me your opinions please, loaning is not going to be an option. Many thanks

how long have you had them all and what are you looking to do?
i'm a softie and may be tempted to keep the old one as would be worried about finding a good home for her being older

I am happy to hack and potter round, as long as I have a horse in my life. I have had my oldest horse the longest.

I think it would be the old mare for me too - for the reason stated above it might be harder to find her a good home and since you've had her the longest

Depends what you want to do really!!

The sentimental part of me would want to keep the old mare, i dont like seeing older horses moved on but i would want to keep the 7yo as i want to compete.

I personally would sell the filly as i wouldn't want to pay livery for something that i cant do anything with.

What do you like doing most at the end of the day??

Tough decision and not one i would want to make

I think you will find it harder to sell the older mare so I think you should keep her. You should be able to find the others homes more easily.

I would keep the old mare, unless you could find a lovely home that would absolutley 100% care for her until the end of her days. If so, then I'd keep the 7 year old.

Definitely keep the older mare - not just because of her age but if you are starting a full time job you want an uncomplicated horse that you know inside out and backwards that you can have fun on if you want, happy hack if you want, and just turn out if you lack time due to pressures of work.

The youngster I'd definitely sell.

The 7 yr old would need a decent amount of schooling and then competing, etc. and it sounds as if you will need that time for other things, such as the job. The 7 yr old will sell well and have a decent future away from you, similarly the youngster.

A very hard decision to have to take - good luck

Airedale, you have hit the nail on the head with your comments. I could not bare to part with my old mare and the worry of her future. She is easy in every respect and I love riding her. The young one again, I cant really do much for a few years and the seven year old does need work, time and commitment which I wont have with the new job.

Thanks everyone, decision made. I will keep my old faithful friend, I owe her this much having had many years of enjoyment with her. The others I will have to find new homes.

If you do have to part with the older mare the VHS will take her and loan her out to one of thier carers, they never sell a horse on and they do spot checks on the carers to make sure the mare is well care for
