Well we all knew it would happen didn't we? Yes Rough Diamond the recent BBC drama based on Irish racing has been cut after just one series.

In a story published in the Racing Post by Graham Green it said:

THE BBC has dropped Rough Diamond, the Sunday evening racing drama screened earlier this year, after just one series.

World Productions, makers of the six-parter filmed entirely on location in Ireland, on Tuesday admitted being “very disappointed” at the corporation's decision not commission any new episodes.

With no other television company preparing to step into the breach, it appears that 13 years on since Trainer failed to capture the public's imagination after two series, the latest dramatic vehicle based on the sport has suffered the same fate.

Rough Diamond, initially delayed a week to avoid a clash with Celebrity Big Brother and the return of Top Gear, saw viewing figures fall after attracting an opening audience of 4.9m, but the final instalment was watched by 3.9m, a significant improvement on the low point of 3.5m, and could have been even better but for the move forward to 7pm that caught many people by surprise.

The series was also not helped by having its run interrupted the previous weekend when the victim of a scheduling change involving a combination of
Comic Relief and live FA Cup football which forced viewers to wait a fortnight before learning how the story ended.

A spokeswoman for World Productions said: “Rough Diamond has not been recommissioned by the BBC, and we are very disappointed. We are not quite sure why the decision was made, particularly as viewing figures seemed to be increasing and there were plot-lines for a second series, but it was, and that's that.”

Rough Diamond was originally heralded as the new Ballykissangel, but the BBC quickly distanced itself from that claim, saying the advent of digital channels had created more choice for viewers, and made comparisons unfair.

A BBC spokeswoman on Tuesday confirmed the decision not to commission another series of Rough Diamond, but was unable to offer any explanation.

it costs much more money to make stuff that requires 'outside' cameras rather than studio trash like Big Bruvver and 'talk shows'

and the Beeb is well known for over the top staffing of production sites compared with the independent sector

beeb has probably saved it's cash to buy more football/rugby/cricket/whateverothersportweareuselessat

yes!!!...it was terrible... sorry!!.. they went out on geldings came back on mares.... plot all over the place.... not even showing the sport in true light... i love horses but not for sake of good programme..
Surely the beeb could do better??????

In Scotland the it was on at 11pm or something ridiculous due to River City and I think they stopped showing it after a few weeks. If it had been on at reasonable hour i would have been more likely to have watched it. It had all the markings of a fantastic series but the lack or real story lines or any continuity really put me off, which is a great shame. The thing with horse programmes is that you have to get it right which Rough Diamond didn't and quickly lost viewers.

I voted 'no' as i want to support equine stuff on TV... but it was terrible, and am glad i don't have to sit through any more of it (i left the TV on to up viewing figers haha, but couldn't actually watch it) it really was dreadfull!!!

the amount of horse sport the beeb now shows I doubt they know the difference between a mare and a gelding !!

and as for plot - please tell me what sort of 'plot' there is in deadenders, bigbruvver, I'm a (hasbeen)celebrity, whatever 'i cannot sing' talent show, I wannapromotemylatestbook/record talkshow

at least some of the scenery was nice and so was the owl and I'm a sucker for Irish accents and it required zero brainpower to watch it and be entertained

True, it was terrible regards the technical stuff i.e. mares were geldings but surely it beats the reruns of open all hours, the 900th series of Heartbeat just as a bit of Sunday night feel good TV.
I did enjoy it as a bit of light hearted entertainment.

Same here, I wasn't waiting up that late just to watch it!

It was totally daft but great fun for a Sunday night. I thought it filled the equally daft "Monarch of the Glen" slot very well!

Sorry couldn't say no due the BBC not having good writers in the first place!

Perhaps if they actually had people that worked in the racing industry they would tell them of the differences of a mare and a gelding, how to unload a horse using a Ifor Williams, don't stack feed up in the middle of the yard over night, galloping horses bareback and then a fixed riding hat coming off, then of course you go to the 'posh' yard! No yard works lots at 3pm, with everyone cleaning tack outside-all the lads and lasses would soon tell their boss where to go!

Sorry it was too cringe worthy to watch!

They ought to bring back trainer-now that was very much like the 'real' racing world! Everyone having affairs etc!

QR: will having a racing drama on tv equate to more equestrian coverage? if that's anything to go by it would only be more awful tripe that was badly acted and painful to watch - not only by those who could spot the errors but by non-horsey people too who look forward to decent dramas on a sunday night. the BBC spokesperson probably could give an explanation but was too embarrassed to!

Sorry but I really can't vote no, though not for the horse or racing related inaccuracies. First of all the show never claimed to be an accurate representation of a racing yard any more than 'Casualty' is an accurate representation of a hospital A and E department. If all shows were true to the industry they were based on most would be very dull. My problem with the show was the weak scripts, poor plotlines and wooden acting. It may have get better with a second series or it may have remained the slightly cringeworthy sunday night tv it started as but based on the first series and the ratings I don't think they were wrong to axe it.

I don't think that they were wrong to axe it, yes I would love to support equine interests on tv however it was technically awful and after just watching a couple of episodes I must admit that i couldn't bring myself to watch anymore of it!

I would of said the were right to axe it if they spent the money on keeping neighbours

A few things - it isn't a BBC drama it was co-funded by both the BBC and RTÉ. Secondly..it was bloody awful...why would anyone want to see another series?

I voted No, because it could have been SO much better, and I want to promote horsy TV, especially since they've decided not to show Badders again. Rough Diamond was a bit crap tho

Some great comments everyone

personally I did not want to see it axed as I was hoping the second series would be better. I agree about the wooden acting, poor scripts as well as the obvious gaffs and it not being a true representation of the racing industry ( Irish). However it was Sunday evening viewing and it made a welcome change to see a drama involving horses than being mainly human interest orientated.
Don't get me wrong I do like Casualty but mainly because I have watched it for years and do find some of the storylines fairly true to life although I do understand that some are very far fetched and nurses and doctors and so on would not necessarily act in that way. However some of the stories I have heard and events I have seen do lend some support to the portrayal of an A and E department.
I also enjoy soaps to some degree and much prefer the likes of Eastenders as it is more gritty and more realistic than the likes of Emmerdale and even worse Coronation Street which imo has declined rapidly in my appreciation of a soap in recent years.
I also really enjoy Desperate Housewives, true escapism! Brilliant storylines, twists, fine acting, attractive ladies ( don't take wrong way as I don't bend that way lol) and even more so some of the blokes especially Mike

Anyway detracting from the point there slightly but I started the thread it's ok lol.
What I was trying to get across was that I have a very varied taste when it comes to tv and film viewing. Faves being sci-fi and love Doctor Who

Rough Diamond was not done any favours by the rescheduling that took place that is for sure. However it did fail to build upon a fairly optimistic pilot. It promised so much yet did not deliver in my expectations of what I was expecting to gain from viewing it. In media terms I was not satisfied ( think that is the term from my media days). Shame as I was just hoping that the second series might just have done that but we will never know

Yes yes yes!

Sure, we need more horsey television, but Rough Diamond was an insult! I know they didn't say it was meant to be accurate, but the problem is, only horse fans would really watch it, and it was so embarrassingly inaccurate that many wouldn't bother anyway!

If only...
a) The freaking horse hadn't been whinnying/snorting every three seconds on loop (and it was so obvious that it wasn't even coming from the horse)
b) they hadn't suggested the horse was naturally aggressive, and showed it to do some predatorial STALKING, etc, when that's not instinctive horse behaviour. What kinda horse STALKS anything? I swear the main guy was raving on about how it was creeping up on him and the kid (first ep I think).
c) The guy hadn't been saying "whoa..whoa boy...whoa...whoa boy" constantly, and magically causing the horse to suddenly be cuddly and relaxed...I think he was actually living up the the "horse whisperer" ideal..O_o
d) the horse hadn't been put in its stable wearing a headcollar and later the boy entered the stable and it was wearing a bridle (handy for those who are short of time - self-tacking horse)...

Need I go on, and describe the "acting" and truly imaginative plots? Probably should shut up =P I think that was basically the first episode, only saw a couple more then gave up.

I really don't agree with that. I don't think it was aimed at horsey people at all. It was meant for the Sunday night tv audience, same target group as things like Monarch of the Glen, Heartbeat and all the other mindless drivel they show for people who don't like Top Gear.

Its Tv guys....What difference does it make if horses changed from mares to geldings? I enjoyed watching it...I'm sure if I watched it really seriously looking for every unacuate fault I wouldn't...I'm sure programs on other interests are far off reality too...But how would we know and why would we care? I know non horsey people who enjoyed it, there will always be wrong perseptions of the horse world by the non-horsey.

I know its not supposed to be a factual program, and tbh I didn't watch it. I only watched about 5 minutes of one episode where they were putting racehorses in a trap together or something?!

I just think there should be some efforts made to be as accurate as possible within reason. For me, the enjoyment of books, tv and films is ruined if there are a lot of glaring inaccuracies and "yeah right, like that would happen" moments. If something is supposed to be realistic, then it should strive to be believeable, even if its unlikely.

I had to vote 'yes' as it really was cringe-worthy!! I agree with every word of the quote above - if they can't get their facts right then leave well alone.

It really was embarrasing, me and my totally unhorsey mother just sat and ripped it to bits for the whole hour, I didnt even watch the last 3 episodes. And I got really p!ssed off with the constant snorting.
