My spanish has all this mane it gets on my nerves if im honest i did pull it at one stage. But my loaner got very upset with me it gets in the reins and everywhere what can i do with it. How many spanish people do pull their horses mane or plat

The mistake I made was not being above the horse to do it, if you do it from the side it goes like this:

Instead of staying tight. I realised this when I achieved it at last on the Shetland last week :D

I haven't got any pictures but I do a similar plait on my chunky cob in summer to keep her mane out of the reins and stop her overheating - she's rather unfit and is a rather 'warm' horse. I start with a normal plait at the top of the mane then add more and more, a bit at a time as I go down - make sure you angle the plait along the neck, not down (as with the usual bobbly plaits). I find it very hard to get one that runs along the top of the neck as she has a lot of mane, mine looks rather like the one in the picture posted above (but not quite so neat!).

start like a normal plait with 3 strands do the first part of the plait but for the 3rd of the plait you are pulling towards the floor you add a bit from the mane, pulling it quite firm and do that all the way along. takes a bit of practice to get it tight all the way along but once you have the hang of it its easy :)

i am trying to get ponies mane to lay over to the right, would doing a running plait help do you think, or should I just stick to normal plaits?

running plait is fine but they do come out easier than normal plaits only takes a little rub and half of it has fallen out :o i would stick to normal plaits tbh :)

SpanishNeddy - how do you get the plait to stand upright on the neck/crest? is it still a running plait as appose to a french plait?
Thanks

Pipper - I have no idea, as the yard he is at schooling livery with do it. I do know how to do them but they end up drooping and looking rubbish when I do them :( his rider did this one and she does all of the spanish horses plaits at our yard as she is so good at them.....they are hard to take out they are so tight! you have to have very strong fingers to pull it together so much.

Thanks everyone looks like lots of practice to get anywhere near the pictures youve shown. I will give it a go once it warms up cant do it when you cant feel the fingers. They all look good will post my attempts if you promise not to laugh

try and have their mane greasy as it makes it easier to grip and hold together... dont spray too much mane and talk conditioner on as it makes it really slippery... if they have a clean mane then wet it down as then it is easier to do :) we want to see pictures too!!
