... when not riding due to horse injury? I have cleaned all my tack, spend ages mucking out/grooming/pampering horse every day but feeling a bit down today with it all. I guess it because I never really got the chance to properly enjoy him ridden before the back/lameness issue cropped up (only owned him 7 weeks and the last 4 he has been having treatment on/off) I'm spending so much money on physio treatments and no guarantee that it will cure the problem despite positivity from vet and physio - its a waiting game as with everything horsey. He is sound when not ridden so for that I should be positive that it is just back tightness but I can't help but be negative today and think what if its arthritis in the back and he will need scans/may not come right etc. I have insurance but not claiming yet as its still under my excess but even so I think I must have spent £400 so far. I don't know I just feel like I saved up for ages, found the perfect horse and then boom everything happened and I'm left miserable and eating smart price.

Don't get me wrong he is a sweetie and I love spending time with him every day. Would spend every minute of the day with him if I could (OH may protest). But just feeling a bit down as I was desperately hoping to have a little Xmas day ride on my new horse.

I fancy some dressage - reckon I could do it on foot and get marked by the judges on my paces?

Perhaps showjumping on foot would be more my forte - always did like the high-jump.

What a nightmare for you. Can you work him in hand? The definition of physiotherapy is physical therapy i.e. exercise to help a problem. Can your physio give you exercises to do?

Could you volunteer as a writer for the local RC dressage? Get some tips for when you get to ride again next year!

Think positive and good luck! (Do you want to clean my tack?

Sorry to hear you're having trouble but re. insurance, even if you aren't claiming you must tell your insurers (if you haven't already) about all of this. I'm surprised that you aren't claiming if you're on £400 already, as once you tell you insurers (which you have to) then they will more than likely exclude his back next year (as will any insurer). Your policy details will say that you have to tell them about any issues or treatment, even if you don't claim, as it may prejudice any further claims and even your policy. I don't mean to frighten you but please don't make the mistake of not telling them. You will also have a time limit on the policy, so if you don't tell them for another month and he does need x-rays or scans, they won't let you claim. Sorry if you already know this, poke me with a stick in that case!

As for what to do when not riding.. is he on box rest? If not then I would do loads of groundwork - in and out of cones, you could try some clicker training or target training, that sort of thing. TBH, I don't ever really do much with mine if he's resting apart from groundwork in the arena. When he was coming off box rest, he was too nutty to even walk down the road in hand! Can you go for walks down the road in hand?

No thats really helpful thanks Chestnut Cob - I haven't really ever had to make a claim before as had sturdy natives that never 'broke' so I will give Petplan a call to explain situation and get advice. £140 of it was just me getting his back done before the vet advised physio so I won't be able to claim that but the latest treatment/future treatment and vets bill I should be able to and obviously any further scans etc if required... This is his last year of being fully insured as he will go onto veteran plan next year so not too worried about exclusions.

Walks down the road is a really good idea - he is pretty quiet so shouldn't tank off. I am allowed to do long reining next week for a couple of weeks before last sedated treatment so that too will be a bit more fun. Hadn't thought of groundwork exercises so will look up a few to keep us busy.

I like the idea of volunteering as a writer so I shall look into it with my RC.

As for your tack, I quite enjoy tack cleaning so pass it this way

Just being nosey and wondering what is wrong with your horse atm? and if it is only the physio you have seen?

Might be wrong but this sounds like someone I know, did you have the horse vetted? Would seriously advise you to have scans done (sorry if you already have).

Check your policy details - I have 60 days from first noticing the illness/injury to claim so you might be able to claim for the first lot of physio. I had physio out to mine 3 or 4 weeks before he was diagnosed with spavins and vet said I would be able to claim for the initial physio, because it was related to the same condition and within the 60 days (I didn't, in the end, just claimed from when vet was first called but I'd only spent £50). The first thing to do tonight is to check your policy wording - you might only have 30 days, but most have 60. On Monday, call Petplan and tell them what is going on. TBH, you're going to have to tell them anyway which means they'll most likely try to exclude something at renewal, so if he's going to need scanning then do it asap. While he's still fully insured, I'd get everything checked out - you should still have time (re. the policy timings) to get him scanned / x-rayed. I'd be surprised if your vet can't tie in the first lot of physio on the claim form.

If you can get hold of something like Kelly Marks' Perfect Manners book, that has some good groundwork exercises in. A lot of it is quite pink fluffy clouds but some common sense too
