We have just got a 2 year old weimeraner and are finding it really difficult to keep/get weight on him. he is currently fed bakers complete, ad lib but he doesn't seem to eat that much and he runs around all the time so practically burns calories off as he eats them!
On recommendation we have got him some tripe to try and get his weight up, is it best to just mix that in raw with his bakers or to cook it first? - Have never fed tripe before!
or does anyone have any other suggestions for getting weight on him. hes all wormed etc up to date

With all due respect the first thing I would do is change his all-in-one to something with a better nutritional content? Dogs love Bakers, but it has enough additives to be the equivalent of blue Smarties :D

I would suggest trying something like Skinners Field Trial Duck and Rice? It is relatively cheap (I was paying around £21.50 for a sack) but it is good at putting and keeping weight on dogs - mine all looked fantastic on it :)

(they are now fed a raw diet to try and improve their teeth btw, but wouldnt have stopped using the Skinners for any other reason)

Finally as far as the tripe is concerned I would strongly recommend feeding it raw - the dogs love it like that, and it smells appalling enough raw without the added nauseating smell when you cook it! :)

Hope this helps :)

Defo agreed with CareyR ... Bakers is terribly bad!

Also, feed tripe raw, it's so good for them. Mine love it and they all do so well on it. It's the only thing that keeps them looking so well through the shooting season, they are out 6 days a week - all day working hard!!!

Agree with the others bakers is a terrible food. Contains practically no meat and is like giving the smarties every day.

And i agree with feeding it raw. Mine get thrown a big chunk a couple of times a week.

Agree with the others here - bin the Bakers asap as it is full of sugars/additives etc - the doggy equivalent of Skittles!!:eek::eek:

You may find he calms down a bit as well when he is off the Bakers - only a bit as he is a Wiermeraner!!;):D

As Carey said see if you can get Skinners it is for working dogs so is for high energy/workload dogs - the hypoallergenic is about £20 for a 15kg sack - it relatively high protein also high oil so he will put on weight with it when you find the right amount for him.:)

Hope that helps.:)

I wouldn't feed bakers either, how do you think they get all the pretty colours..lot's of additives. If you change to something more nutritional you will find that your dog calms down a bit and with something like skinners or even Dr Johns platinum and raw tripe, he will put on weight.
As for how to serve it, definitely raw, have you smelled tripe cooking! yuk lol
I had a friend who would stand with a big tripe and just slice chunks off and the dogs would catch it. It was like feeding time at the zoo.

Do you ever feed a biscuit with it katie? I want to try tripe with mine as most Mastiff breeders use it daily tbh and Emma needs to put a bit of weight on. But they often add a biscuit which Tojo cant have. How do you balance the diet?

I used to feed raw tripe and nothing else to mine. They did breed showing, competed in agility etc successfully without anything extra. The only time I introduced complete was over the last 2 or 3 weeks when a bitch was in whelp and whilst feeding pups.
I used to get the whole bellies and cut big chunks off, my GSDs used to have a piece around A4 size, they loved it.

And agree with everyone else, dump the Bakers.

Where is the best place to get the skinners from, is it online or can it be got from normal pet shops?
i also have 11 year old and 9 year old Weimeraners so would that be suitable for them as well, the bitch is prone to putting on weight but i guess its just a matter of finding the right balance for them all

No i don't feed any buiscuit. Mine are fed completely raw. I just have the tripe as 2 or 3 meals a week.

It would be fine for all of them - I get my Skinners from the feed merchants where i get my horse feed from - they do have a website if you can't get it but check feed shops and farm shops first.:)

Remove from fridge. Hold nose. Throw tripe at dog. Run in other direction :p

Only joking.

Feed by eye and I wouldn't bother cooking. When I was sourcing Skinners I just rang the company and they referred me to a local rep, who was very helpful.

Mum feeds tripe, 1/4 a block and a handful of very basic biscuit/meal for the Jacks (sometimes no biscuit/meal if Millie's getting podgy!) per meal twice a day and 1/2 a block and 2 handfuls of meal twice a day for the Wire Vizzy's.

She buys it in bulk (very cheap) and freezes it, takes it out the night before to defrost and feeds it as it is.

You may want to wear gloves as it pongs and that pong lingers! lol

Yes you can get it from all the ordinary pet shops, around here (Gloucestershire) it is everywhere :) I would think it would be very suitable for your other Weimeraners too (sorry, pause whilst I spelt that correctly!) but if they have any particular needs I would chat to the distributors/Skinners rep and they can advise?

As others have said, I always feed mine by eye on a day to day basis, so up and reduce the food intake as necessary :)

Thanks everyone, this is my first venture into here and it's been really nice, i'll definately be back with an update once they have been on skinners for a while. i'll give them a ring and ask them about the others then check out where i get my feed from - have never looked for it before!
