Hiya, this has probably been done before sorry! But are there any websites in particular that I could use to find bridlepaths/permissive paths/byways around me? My ordnance survey map has gone AWOL!
My yard is in an area with lots of quite busy roads unfortunately :( so it's difficult just to go and 'find' bridlepaths really, as that'd involve hacking along these dangerous roads with knowing if I'll find anything suitable leading off them!
Having said that my boy and I have been known to amble for several hours without any intended route, and still manage to find good enough routes. :D

Thanks

Could phone your local highways and byways officers at your county council HQ and riding club ?
Our local council and bridleways club are very happy to help / advize when needed.
Hope you soon find a few good rides.
Teg :)

Go on to your County Council website and see if they have Definitive Map on on-line. Some do, which show you bridlepaths in every parish. Otherwise a local Riding Club may have a bridleways officer, your County BHS branch almost certainly will have a bridlepaths officer, there may be a local bridlepath society - see BHS website if it is affiliated.

Other than that, you can borrow OS maps from the library if you just want to have a look to see if there are any bps in your area and then buy one if it looks worth it.

Do you know of any Trec or Endurance competitors locally, they will know all the rides to go on. Also are there any South Essex Toll Rides around your part of the world?

This has been a mission of mine lately and I have had reasonable success by looking on my local council website and looking at pages relating to local rights of way. I have found a few permissive bridleways this way which are not listed on o/s maps as they are not "official" as such as they are by the agreement of the land owner usually for a specific length of time.

Thanks very much everyone!
I seem to remember looking on my local council website and not finding much, will have another look though in case I'm remembering pessimistically!
Diolch, Teg! ;) Will check out local RCs.
Teapot thanks so much that's so useful, just been on Bing now it's great!!
ORANGEHORSE, thanks, never heard of South Essex Toll Rides, will look them up now- are they actually based in South Essex (possible blonde question I know!! ) because if so that'll be out of my neck of the woods unfortunately, I'm N Essex and horse is S Cambs!
Nickles1973, think i need to get out and asking some landowners as there are quite a few round me that state horseriders must ask before using the tracks. Sometimes I've been out riding and have asked farmers I've seen in the fields if they mind me riding round the edges of their fields (keeping well clear of crops etc) and have always had a positive response, they say they don't mind at all if people ask! 'You don't ask you don't get' applies I guess.
