How to freshen up your riding hat

I have a couple of different hats here for guests, grooms etc.

I usually wipe with a hot, damp cloth to remove excess oil and dirt. I also sprinkle with bicarbonates of soda, leave 24 hours, and hoover them.

And I leave them in the sun so the UV can do its thing from time to time.

I never put mine away damp, it goes on the bench in the sun for an hour or so after riding. Now I only ride a couple of hours a day, that is sufficient. In winter, I dry it on the boiler, not as hot as a radiator but warm enough to dry rapidly.

When I rode for a living and smelly hats were inevitable, I did something I would not recommend, but did work. Every time I got a new hat, I would fill a bucket with Pevadine (diluted of course - but only until it was still orange, not yellow) and immerse the hat. Let is soak all the Pevadine in for an hour or so. Leave to dry in the sun.

I would not recommend it because I have no idea how soaking for an hour affects the protective qualities of the hat or longevity, but the Pevadine within the material stopped the smelly bacteria ever getting a grip. I did it with every new hat and never once had a smelly one ever again. Never had to repeat it again. I did still dry them thoroughly before putting away.

I have two uvex hats, it with lots of vents, it just never seems to be an issue, they are made of good material, I leave it uncovered it it is slightly damp, and put away when dry, never seems to get sticky / smelly.

How do you keep your riding hat clean and fresh on the inside?
use a panty liner as the sweat band on the inside. You can get hypoallergenic ones. Soft and when used just rip off and put another one in its place.
A lot, lot cheaper than buying sweat liners! :)

I use foot spray from Savers - £1.00 on the inside of mine. Its very good. 1687954577939.png
