wondered if anyone knows of any different ways to get a horse to slow to a fence, tried poles infront and behind the fence and gridwork but neither has worked!
and i had to reschool mine a bit, eg sitting deep and back up to the jump but then still making sure i put her and myself up, but this was only ok as she is a very experienced horse that can get herself out of trouble and doesnt need a perfect approach to a jump.
also putting appropiate stops in grid work, but dont do this without guidance.
generally get a lesson or two because anything i suggest can hinder rather then help if done wrong
How keen is the horse? Riding my horse towards the fence as if I was going to jump it then circling just before it worked wonders in calming him down and keeping a rhythm but he has never refused in his life and is ultra keen so dont know how it would affect a horse that might run out anyway etc
Gridwork gridwork gridwork, if it's not working your not buiding the right grids. Getting lessons from someone very experienced would also be helpful as they can see you and your horse together and can give you exercises to help your horse and stop any habits that you may have that is encouraging it to rush.
My youngster used to rush into fences. Yes he was green but also quite unbalanced. Now that we have stayed on the flat for a month or so his balance has greatly improved and now I can steady up to a fence and see better strides etc. I do agree with lots of lessons if it's possible for you to do so.
