As title really Oscar was diagnosed with Laminitis 5 weeks ago he has had box rest for four weeks and is now on the hardstanding and sound as a pound!

I want to get him back out with the others soon (He is sad just watching them play without him!)

But want to do it really slowly as not to provoke lami and will go as slow as required. I will not put him back out 24/7 he can come in at night or day time?!

Any tips on best way to ease him out? What to look out for etc

Thanks

Best turning out for a couple of hours a day for a few weeks with a muzzle. After a couple of weeks start to increase...still with the muzzle.

If your able to fence off a small part of the field and allow him to graze in this with his muzzle on then you can slowly increase the grass and the time he can go out for

After a few weeks and when you feel he can go out for longer periods best turning out at night rather than the day as the sugar levels are lower in the grass at night.

Avoid wet and warm days and i know it's the wrong time of year but don't turn out in the frost.

He'll have to wear a muzzle for a few months at least and don't forget that there will be a growth spurt in the grass around Sept/Oct so watch him closely.

After Oct you can prob remove the muzzle for winter grazing but be prepared to put it on again end of Feb/March next year depending on the weather and growth of grass.

Don't starve him, soak your hay for 24hrs (changing the water every 12 hrs) double net it so it takes longer to eat. Try Formula For Feet or Farriers Formula as a supplement to boost the growth of his feet. Also try feeding Happy Hoof or Healthy Hooves which is made for horses which are prone to laminitis, it's full of fibre which will help his tummy and added vits and mins.

Sorry if I'm telling you anything you already know
