Just got super section A for our 3 3/4yo son yesterday and he spent all day today alternating between asking if he could ride again (after walking around the arena for half an hour first thing this morning!) and trying to vault onto the pony every time I turned my back.. Awww.. Am thrilled he's so keen but husband grinding teeth in the background imagining more money into the horse pit.

Anyway, son has a very broad head but it is relatively short, front to back (I blame the c-section). Local saddlery couldn't find anything to fit as a hat that is wide enough is too long. The closest fit is my own show hat (Showjumper 2000) that I keep for good but it's a 7 3/8 which he needs across the head but it slips forward, though less than anything else we've tried.

Far from ideal but all I can think of is adding foam or a similar material front and back to pad out the hat. I can't be the first person with this problem and wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

have a look at the Horka hats, or the Cresta or Penta- there is a dial on the hat so you can just wind the dial to alter the fit of the hat. it is quite a dramatic change in size so should accomodate his head. it also means that it will fit him for years to come as he increases in size. And they are not expensive

Please don't pad up your hat to fit. it will not provide him with the protection he needs.

You can get some hats here with removable / adjustable padding - wonder if there is anything comparable in the UK? Specific childrens hats fit very differently to adult hats of the 'same' size - it's worth trying a few different brands as they are very different. My head loves Charles Owen Kids Own hats!!!!

Thanks everyone. I've tried the popular makes of childs hat that my local saddlery stock but not the Horka, Cresta or Penta. I haven't even heard of these brands - I'll do a bit of searching on the internet but does anyone know where they can be got?

My head is wider than it is long (proportionately to normal people's), and the very lovely local saddler used to have some sticky strips to put into the back of it (under the inner lining). They were white and a bit cotton wool like except less fluffy, and each was about 3mm thick (appologies for the awful description). I think they were specially designed for the purpose. He just used to build them up until it fitted properly (and until just now, I assumed that was how everyone had their hats fitted--I don't think I've ever tried one on that just fitted).
Currently I'm in a giant Charles Owen Kids Own hat, and that only requires one padding strip, so they might be a good place to start.
