When i first got my boy 4 years ago he never knew how to lunge so i have taught him and now he lunges fantastic :D until it comes to cantering he does a few strides then goes back to trot little monkey.

How can i make him canter for longer and go back to trot when i ask him too?

Thanks in advance xx

I aften run next to the horse on a streight line when i first start teaching canter on the lunge. Useing lots of vocal incouragment to keep them going then ask for trot before they reach the corner. Eventualy I keep them going around the corner. Soon they lurn to balance and i don't need to run (and look like an idiot :p ;) :D) to keep them going.
Hope this makes sence.

Thats ok. Luckly I'm doing the filming so you can't see what i'm doing :D or how silly i look doing it ;) :p You do here the vocal incouragement and i use alot of it ;) :p :D :D I find it works for me. Got Herbs going in the end :D :D

If you can also do some loose schooling with him. As sometimes its a bit restricted with circles on the lunge.

The loose-schooling is a good idea. I have the opposite problem: my pony sometimes goes postal when asked to canter on the lunge, and will attempt to careen off at a 90-degree angle to the circle. I don't have this problem loose-schooling, and am wondering how to make it go away on the lunge.

It is extremely hard work for them to canter on the lunge, so make the circle as large as possible (while still in control!) and only ask for a bit at a time.

Spookypony - Thanks. Very True sometimes he will be very scared of it (snorting at it) and sometimes the fencing isnt there. Lately he has been very good with it.

Orangehorse - Thanks. Thats what i try but sometimes he is a right pain to get in to canter.

I will try everyones advice xx
