and before anyone shoots me down.... not after getting his head in all pretty when he isnt working properly.

He goes well, but does have a tendancy to have a "pokey nose". This gets even worse at a competition, so I loose a few unecessary marks as he looks terrible

I do lots and lots of turns, loops, serpentines etc in trot to get either of my determined-to-be-pokeynosed-horses to truly soften and listen. Because they are always turning one way or another, it seems to loosen them off without me having to specifically focus on it.

If that isn't working I do 20m circles spiralling down to 10m off the outside leg, then back out to 20m off the inside leg. Anything that gets them flexing voluntarily and really listening seems to do the trick.

sometimes it takes longer with a pokey nose horse I have to work mine for at least 20 miutes before he rounds down, I also think it is me that then starts to soften and relax and it all comes together just as it is nearly time to finish ! loads of transitions and circles leg yeild etc
 
Same as Jella , our pony pokes his nose in trot , so I found a really good instructor who has worked really hard with my daughter and ponio and they are starting to get some lovely work out of him ( without any gadgets ) so thats the best advice I can give
