Been thinking that Ty's 'field' could be endurance - he's got boundless energy and still has fizz at the end of a 4 hour hack.

so how do I get into it? I'm soon to be based in Esher, Surrey and would really appreciate any contacts!

Have a look on the Endurance GB website and then follow the links to the local groups. All the local groups run training and social rides throughout the season - these vary in distances but as a rule most rides have a 10 and a 20 mile route. You can join the local group without having to join Endurance GB. If you find Ty gets on well and you want to have a go at a competitive ride, then you can "try before you buy" as EGB allow you to do 2 rides without joining (it is quite expensive to join and register your horse, so it is well worth having a go first). You will have to have Ty's heartrate taken before and after the ride and trot up for the vet and also let the farrier have a look at his feet - so it is well worth having a practice at home, so he knows what to expect. Once you move, it will also be worth looking in your local Free Ads as they usually list other pleasure rides in your area. You don't need any special tack to get started - just a well fitting saddle and bridle and you need comfortable jods, chaps and boots (not long ones) and a sleeved shirt (polo/rugby etc). Hope this helps - good luck.

OH joined them they are all over the country check their website they are really friendly he loved it. Infact had to email them a couple of weeks ago to say he can't join again this year as Oesteopath said he can't do anymore than walk for quite a while with his back OH not horse.

He also had a go at Le Trek this he loved did it once as a taster in pairs (you could go on your own if you wanted) cames second.

oooo I'm excited now! Did think about Le Trek.....apparently they have scarey things that the horse has to pass? ty really is bombproof and if they're on his right hand side even better! h ah aa

We just did an EGB ride today - the Iceni Group based around Thetford have pleasure rides and competative ride - we do the pleasure ones. We did 26km, there were options of 16km, 26km and 40km, so something for everyone! It was a lovely ride and they are lovely people, I would say it is well worth contacting your local group.

I don't know if this will work - link to the Marnie cam from today! photos

I second that she is a lovely lady and the group is brilliant.
A lovely bunch of people and a wide variety of horses and ponies take part too. It is certainly a sport for the whole family from what I have seen of it

I am with the South West Group - love it - you go to places you would never normally get the chance to ride.

I ride in long boots, so just preference really - i am not a fan of chaps and my boots are really comfy.

go to endurance gb website and find your local group. If you speak to them they will more then likely be really helpful in explaining what you need to know.

The first year i did it, there was one ride that my normal companions weren't coming to, so i asked if the knew of anyone that wanted some company and ended up meeting a great lady.

If you want to PM me with any questions then feel free!!

I'm starting off endurance this year as soon as the box I'm looking at passes its mechanic check. We're nowhere near you so I doubt out paths will cross but good luck and let me know how you get on with it

Hope you and your horse have a great time! I'm always pleased to hear of people having a go at endurance - it's a fantastic sport and more riders need to discover it. You should find everyone really friendly and helpful - do enjoy it and remember to look at the scenery from time to time!
