How to get more people wearing High - Viz...

Just a very random thought, but what if insurers put a clause in policies that say's potentially not covered in RTA's unless adequate High - Viz is worn by riders or police can procecute for 'reckless riding' if they cause / involved in an accident.

I know its heartless but I too am sick to death of people riding in the nr dark dressed in black!!

- open for a debate!!

Just to say I always wear mine...........as per another poster it would be like not wearing a hat ( which I most definitly wouldn't )
 
I agree that all riders should wear the high viz. I wear mine all year round, as even in the summer when you are under the tree's a driver can't see a dark horse.

I dont think putting it on the insurance is a solution though....

I know so many riders who just 'dont' because it too much of a hastle to put it on, or it doesnt look 'cool'.

Oh well, I feel sorry for the drivers, and who are the first ones to complain if drivers dont slow down for them...?! I also feel sorry for the horses, as they are more likely to get hurt.

Be responsible riders.
 
Don't quote me on it, but aren't insurance companies funky about high viz and RTAs already?!

Also, what would you consider adequate high viz? Personally I have tabard or jackets, hat band, thick neck strap, boots front & back, and quarter sheet :)

I think anything is better than nothing, I just sometimes feel sorry for drivers - we are always hounding them about 'little ' or 'lack' of respect for horseriders but whilst we have 30%(guessing) of the horsey hacking population not wearing anyform of high-viz or simply not thanking drivers for slowing down how can we give them grief!!

This is really important. To someone a tabbard may be enough. To me I wear a tabbard, hat cover, horse has leg bands, hat, sheet (in all weathers), neck straps, flashing lights in rain etc.

TBC - we should go hacking together, we would look very fluorescent!

Funky colours def better!

I wear the hot pink ;) talbard, hat band, the horses wear the exercise sheet and leg bands all round.

Pink works better than yellow or orange (ive tested them all!) we have some nasty roads around our way :(

Oh, I think it's way more than 30% don't have it - at least round here. It seems no one wears anything hi-viz; except a couple of older ladies at our yard who were there when my friend had her accident (hi-viz wouldn't have made any difference in that case, but I think it has just made them think about safety all round), and me! We do have plenty of off-road hacking and don't need to go on a road, but I will get leg bands for Hugo, too before we do go on the road.
 
I dont have to go on roads (been once in past 2 months, but this was only for checking horse was ok on them!).
I wear hi-viz insulated jacket at all times when out hacking on the commons - and am still laughed at by some of the other local riders.
At least I know that if I have an unfortunate off in the heather etc that I will be spotted.
Also, the local dog walkers see me coming much of the time & are all really great about keeping dogs under control - for which they get a hearty thanks from me as I go past.

I also wear same type jacket when in the fields if its dusk or dark as I know I'll be seen - and then bright coloured top clothes in better weather - so I can still be seen. You never know when a freak accident can happen & its not pleasant being stranded on your own & nobody could see you (been there, done that about 15 yrs ago :( )

I dont own a horsey yard jacket in dark colours at all!

I've been trying to get some of the locals to pop something on - anything, even just a hat band, but it falls on deaf ears as they 'dont do' road work, so they can't see the point in bothering :( (mind you, some complain about the dog walkers letting dogs run about when they go past ;)
