I've been having some real problems getting my horse's tail white - it was white when I bought him! It doesn't matter which product I use (tho naturally some work better than others) it still has a yellow-tinge to it. I've even tried washing up liquid and then rubbing chalk into it (never again!). I can use the better products and his legs and body go really white but not his tail, so basically I was wondering if anyone can recommend anything!

blonde hair dye worked in ours, like the lightest shade they do...
wouldnt recommend doing it very often but before big shows it works well

and obviously i dont mean to use it on the dock
we even condition it afterwards

I have the same problem with my mare only her tail was yellow when I got her. I have got a sachet of net curtain whitener ready for my next attempt at getting her tail less yellow. Do let me know if you find anything that works for your horse please.

Mae doesnt have a white tail but has 4 white socks, i use powder to bring them up.

The stuff like curtain or underwear whitener should do the trick.

The shampoos with a blue colouring in seem to work well on my horse. The blue cancels out the yellow and makes it look whiter. If his tail is really manky I leave the shampoo in for say 15 minutes and then rinse off. I also rinsed his tail in Canter Coat Shine because I'd no conditioner and it worked a treat, it had a real shine and softness to it.

I use cheap baby shampoo, and I find that it's much better than some of the more expensive whitening shampoos you can buy.

It's not a great photo, but it shows how clean his tail was after two decent washes with baby shampoo (his tail was very grubby beforehand!).

Wow your boy looks like Murph - what breeding is he. I used to use Ariel or some other brand washing liquid - non bio ofcourse on Murph's tail and it works better than the expensive whitening shampoos you can buy.

I wash it in a blue shampoo, leave for 5 minutes then rinse, spray with coat conditioner and most importantly plait and put into a Tailgator tail bag at all times unless actually being ridden! They are at www.tailgator.co.uk I swear by them!

He's a registered Danish Warmblood by Andiamo, you can look at his full breeding here - http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/albani7
