I've got a 15hh TB mare who I bought about a month ago. I've been lunging her, lunge jumping her and turning out 3 times a week (limited turnout at yard). She's settled in well now and I'd like to get her fit for competition, mainly SJ and 2ft9-3ft3 ish ODE.

I haven't been able to ride her much as her saddle was poorly fitted, however that problem has been solved now.

She is well behaved but sometimes gets a bit excited in canter, not a typical fizzy TB though.

Anyone have any ideas how to get her fit?

Thank you.

The best way in my mind to get any horse seriously fit is lots of good old fashioned gentle hacking out starting off at about one hour and building it up to a good four hours and introducing some trotting cantering and galloping and even some schooling while hacking out.

lots of walking initially, then incorporate short trots and build up from there. try interval training (search this website for that) and also look under horse care section on this website for training and fitness programes.
nothing beats a steady build up to several hrs riding a day, focus on the gradual and she will muscle up nicely.

Do you know what I love doing. 15 minutes trot in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon with a nice long warm up and cool down (with lots of stretching and long and low). Try do the trots long and low too, because that will build up the top line and all the other muscles! Slowly increase the trotting time then incorperate canter work.

Just remember it will take a while to get the muscles warmed up and even longer to cool her off because she is so unfit. Good luck and keep us up to date

Lots of walk, trot, transitions, a good old hack with some hill work ideally! Plenty of warming up and cooling down and circling, to help build up muscles and get her more flexible. Slowly introduce the trot though, and gradually introduce a few strides of canter at a time so she gets used to it. Don't forget to update! xx

im doing long reigning with my TB boy at the moment, started off the first couple of weeks in walk, am now going up to trotting and putting a few poles out in the school, then will eventually take him round the fields before getting him ridden again
