Just made a short video of how to dismount for some of my less knowledgable clients :p, if anyone fancies having a look and telling me if there is anything terribly wrong that I haven't noticed I would be grateful :D

The video is to accompany a short description about how to do it, so the video is just because some people prefer visuals, it isn't supposed to be a step-by-step kind of vid.

That all looks fine to me! And it's good to see both legs swinging free from the stirrups, some new riders forget one foot in and get into trouble so this should remind them.

Personally I expect the horse's head to stay up with the reins kept short while I dismount both because it is good manners (I don't like them eating grass when we are working) and because it's safer, e.g. if something happens you have a better chance of re-establishing control and some riders will tip forwards when the head is low.
 
i agree about the head being up, with the head down you feel less secure getting off also horses are more interested in eating so not paying attention to you and can take a step forward with it's head down and sometimes stand on you if you don't get off 'cleanly', if that makes sense!
 
Not sure if this is an actual rule or just the way I was taught but I never get off whilst horses head is down and keep the reins in my hand... just my thoughts Im certainly not qualified enough to say for definate!!!

Agree with Booboos comment re the stirrups too :)
 
what about the bum slide method!

Swing the right leg over the neck and slither down the saddle landing facing away from the horse :D This is the method to use when you have been hacking in the cold and cant face landing with a thud on cold dead feet!!
 
Looks good, my only comment would be (same as everyone else's) - keep hold of the reins and keep the horse's head up. A beginner could be thrown off balance quite easily if a) the horse put it's head down as they leaned forward, or b) the horse decided to take a wander while they were half off!

ETA - I'm ashamed to admit, though, that I haven't dismounted properly in years :o I always kick a leg over the horse's neck and hop off that way :p
 
The dismount is fine, but I want my horse's head up, standing square and paying attention to what I'm doing. There is an opportunity for that horse to take off whilst you are mid-dismount so I want the reins in my left hand. Also, I swing over as you do, but stop as I'm laying over the saddle and gently lower myself to the ground to prevent ankle jarring.
 
Haha! :o How embarrasing (about the grammar thing), actually it's google adword's fault. Maybe I'll be getting the wrong kind of audience....

Agreed head should be up, my bad, but this is really for beginners who will have someone holding the horse anyway.

Oh and I stopped doing the 'over the neck way' the day my horse bolted mid swing, ouch!! Be careul with that one!

He he, it did make me chuckle when I saw it, although thinking about it- that probably says more about the way I think than anything else :eek::p oops!

Love the idea of making the video- I am teacher training at the moment and we have done lots of different learning styles: everybody learns best in different ways so I think its fab to use this as another way of getting what you are teaching across :)

KS- umm yes -I rathar hoped that the winky face thingy gave that away :(
 
I really tried not to post this but my inner grammar pedant is howling at me. Using 'off of' is grammatically wrong. It is preferable and generally recognised as correct in British English just to use 'off'. Your video title is fine.
 
Oh that's interesting! You learn something new every day :)

My grammar is sadly lacking- I just assumed that there must be another way of putting it correctly in order to distinguish between the two possible meanings :D
 
If you were to remake the video; bright gloves so they can see where your hands are, different angles, don't let go of reins and horse's head up ;)

You could go even further by showing them 'around the world' and 'scissors' :)

Lauren you are absolutely right, I probably will remake it one day when the weather's nice it but I just found that footage of me getting off a horse (oo-er) and thought it would do. I'm just lazy. And confused about English grammar!

ETA: I'm far too old and inflexible for around the world and scissors, tried at pony club last summer and nearly did myself a mischief!

I only meant off one's foot, La Fiaba! Honest! As I'm sure did Tannenbaum....
