Just wondering how do people keep the weight off or get the weight off their youngsters which have not yet started doing any work?

i have the same problem but with one i ride!

you could try restricting the grazing, dividing one slice of hay into 5-6 piles so they have to move around, scatter sliced up carrots around the small paddock so again they have to move about to find it.

could you start loose schooling the youngster? within the whole arena so they are not restricted to small circles - would get them used to voice commands also.

leading out in hand off-road and on the roads - that would also be a good experience.

hope that helps,
gemma

Restrict grazing, walk out in hand and maybe a slim fast supplement?

To be honest since they are still growing they shouldn't get fat easily, the main factor is getting them on grazing that is appropriate for their breed type ie no cattle grazing for natives!

thanks for the suggestions

He is currently on restricted grazing as we are strip grazing the fields. Those are good ideas for the field but he is in with two others so i can't do that.

He is a 2yr old cob (middle pic below) and i have just started introducing long-reigning, i will have to start leading him out more.
Just starting to worry his weight is creaping up a bit and i know it is especially not good with him growing.

Didn't make an iota of difference to my fatty! She's also on restricted grazing but not in work. Just looking at the grass over the electric fencing seems enough for her to put weight on!

my mums mare seems to be able to do that too, have been able to manage her weight this year with more work though which is good.
