Hi :) Basically my o/h's parents have two dogs. A 9/10 year old lab and a 4/5 year old collie x lab (the labs pup). The lab has had 3/4 litters of puppies 'because they look cute' (you can see where im going...) and is not in the best condition, very over weight, lethergic and suffers from epilepsy but given no medication. The other dog is in very poor condition, skinny, very dull coat, and too much energy. It lives in a tiny utility at the back of their house at night and in the garden all day (in all weathers) which is fenced off and an average size. It isnt allowed to come in the house as it has had no training although listens to my o/h when he goes back there a couple of times a month and really does want to learn! He eats his food so quick he throws it back up so never seems to actually consume much and is just generally 'mad.' I have no idea if either of these two get wormed either.

They are fed twice a day - half a can of pedigree *vom* tin can and a handful of wagg biscuit stuff. This is obviously not enough and think the only reason the other dog is so fat is because it does NOTHING and has had so many puppies. The other dog NEEDS more suitable food but they do not see this. I have finally got it into my o/h's head about it all but just thinks im 'insulting' them and saying theyre bad dog owners. I am trying to find food suited to the dog and have been looking at skinners which is 29p a day to feed - a lot cheaper than these awful tins, butttt they then say that dogs 'need' meat chunks and wet food and dry food isnt enough *rolls eyes.* Can anyone reccomend a suitable food? Also do any of these pedigree/wagg type foods have links to worsening epilepsy?

I am a first time dog owner so still learning myself so all idea welcome :)

A very difficult situation for you as a dog owner for over thirty years from what you say the dogs could greatly benefit from a different regime.
Dogs do not need wet food our dogs are fed James Wellbeloved dry there are lots of good dry foods on the market. They get chicken cooked as a treat because it is high in protein.
You could show them on the tin how little meat there is in them sometimes only 3-4% rest is a lot of rubbish ! This makes them fat and do not get the protein they require. It will be difficult to get them to change .Do the dogs get walked and allowed to run free at all ?
He may be being sick because of a heavy worm burden can you take him to the vets for a check over and some advice .
Buy a bag of suitable dried food read the ingredients well and introduce it slowly with the tinned and then remove tinned food they need educating in a good way.
Let me know how you get on.

can you engineer a third party to go round or come round with you at some point? maybe a professional (vet/vet nurse/dog warden/dog trainer), as in you pop in to pick something up and they happen to be with you and comment/offer advice on the dogs.

If not contact dog warden or good local rescue and ask if they would pop round to give an opinion/advice on the dogs conditions and lifestyle. maybe without mentioning your name if that would help the situation.

my in laws were like that so i used to go and walk the horrid aggressive biting snarling bundle of jack russel 3 times a week, she was tied up in the kitchen most of the time and used to bite anyone who went in and out of the back door, she used to bite everyone when they put her lead on/she used to get on laps and bite if you made her get off-you had to get someone to pass you a malteaser and show her that to make her get off! they all looked so surprised when on my first visit I asked the dog to get off and when she didn't I just stood up so she fell off. I never won with the dog being fed human food/the aggression etc but a least she got walked and stopped biting me - I hated that dog but at it was not her fault she was like she was.

I don't actually know how you'd get through to someone on something as simple as a feeding issue, if they already think it's OK to breed from a known epileptic.

This exactly. I've been debating whether to just leave them too it but every time I go over to stay it really does anger me. Theyre so airy fairy and clueless yet if I even mention the way they look after their dogs to my o/h he becomes horrendoudly defensive and says im insulting them. But thanfully he is coming round after being forced to watch many animal welfare programmes...

No, I totally agree on the food. My little chi has wet food as does find dry food harder to eat, but has many bones to keep teeth healthy. They see the pedigree tins and 'big chunks of healthy solid meat' *dohh!* Errrrr, when I go round (2/3 times a year for weekends/longer stays) they get walked atleast twice a day (they live on a huge farm?!) with my dog as I would not not walk mine. I think they do go for walks but not sufficient and certainly only up and down the drive or around a field. I highly unlikely think they get wormed as they do not go to the vets for any jabs etc either so im sure worming is at the bottom of the priorirty list somewhere. My o/h said he will buy him some food and a bowl that slows them down eating. Its so difficult as they live 160 miles away so very rarely see them anyway and certainly do not know them well enough to tell them what to do/not to do. We are hoping to have our own house in the next couple of years and have the lab x come live with us.

Very difficult as live so far away so dont think it'll be possible to just pop in haha. They live in the middle of absolute no where so no one actually sees these dogs unless I insist we take them to the beach when I go down there.

Ahh thats a shame about the jack russell :( Thankfully neither of vicious, the younger one is just too over friendly and energetic and not many people appreciate having a big dog knock them over!

The distance and location makes it very hard,

This pisses me off. Why do people even want dogs if they are just going to lock it in the garden all day and throw a tin of food at it!? Poor little sod must be starved of attention.

I agree vieshot. He just absolutely craves attention and training. We would like to have him when we have our own house and start agility with him, he would be brilliant. I already do it with my chi and he loves it - such good mental and physical stimulation for them, just want this poor dog needs :(
