horse is refusing bute in her feed and vet has given me danilon and says they like it better but she wont touch it. can i make into a paste and syringe it or any other ideas please.

I've syringed meds before, can be a bit of a nightmare to get the mixture the right consistence and amount to fit in one syringe.

but have used natural yogurt or honey to make the paste.

Get your vet to give you Danilon instead. Same effect, nicer taste and mine eats it happily, whereas with Bute I tried, syrup, marmite, jam sandwiches, treacle ............ all were refused and to be fair, it is pretty sharp!

Must learn to read, sorry - can't help, my uber picky horse eats Danilon happily.

Garlic? Very overpowering, or honey maybe, mixed with hot water to liquidise it a bit?

I really really struggled with this earlier this year when my girl had a virus... She is an evil genius about detecting meds on her food.

I syringed for a few days but she hated it and I felt mean as she was so poorly.

Then a lady in the yard recommended buying some high fibre cubes and soaking a handful in warm water to form a mash. I was sceptical as I'd tried all sorts in her usual feed, including honey, grated carrot, apple juice... But she loved it and practically mugged me for her bucket full of meds every evening!!

Worth a shot :)

thx will try that .have some high fibre blocks i can soak..

I mix mine with smooth apple sauce or apple flavoured baby food. Then suck it up using a large syringe, then feed it like a wormer. Works every time with mine

My late boy wouldn't eat bute or danilon in his feed, i used to put LOTS of apple juice in his dinner, worked every time.

Oddly mine won 't touch it in a big feed, but will happily eat it in just a handful of plain molasses sugar beet.

I've had the bute as a paste (in a syringe) before for a pony who refused powdered Bute and also Danilon. The Bute paste is more expensive but as a previous poster said, none of it gets wasted.

I feed mine in the field - they soon learn that its survival of the fittest, and that if they don't eat it, they lose it! Even my fussy "won't even sniff it if theres' bute in it" horse will eat up with no fuss if there's competition!

Marmite sandwiches are good. I've also had success with putting it in a very small handful of molassed sugar beet, with his proper feed in sight but out of reach. I give a handful of normal feed, then the laced sugar beet, but make sure they're at least focussed on the rest of the normal feed so they eat the sugar beet without really thinking about what they're doing.

I syringe mine - sachet of bute or danilon in a syringe, add water, shake up, quickly into horse's mouth. Horse won't eat it in a feed, and I don't find there's any wasted.

My horse can detect medicine in his food from metres away, however I have devised a method which works for us.....

Double handful of Safe & Sound (or similar), double handful of pony nuts then sprinkle with water and mix. Add medicine and mix thoroughly making sure all the powder is sticking to the food and not settled on the bottom. I then lace it with liquid molasses (tablespoon or less) and mix again and garnish with some chopped carrot! The molasses seem to be the thing that do it for him and he ends up licking the bottom of the bowl for ages to get it all off.

This . . . and it dissolves more quickly if you mix with warm water.

I had to syringe it into my old horse. The vet suggested adding a tsp of ready brek to it and it was a revelation!!!! It puffed up slightly so it wasn't watery and it worked a treat. I just put the medication into a syringe, added water, added a tsp of ready brek and shake. It turned it thicker and made it harder to just spit it out.

like that idea ,will try tomorrow.

I've mixed with a bit of water with bute and syringed it into horses mouth before but it's a bit of a faf, depending how often they need it.

My fussy horse ate danilon though, what are you feeding your horse, just wondering as mine has quite a sloppy feed with ready mash which he loves and seems to hide the taste of the danilon and his other supplements. Maybe if you can find a feed he really likes that can cover it?

Good luck anyway! :)

Mine was on Bute/ danilon for a year and she got wise to it so we ended up putting it in a sandwich, but slightly wetting the bread so it stuck to it and didn't go everywhere. I've known people take the core out of apples and put it in there but mine soon got wise (three years later and she's only just trusting apples again ;) )

does your horse eat treacle or honey?? if so mix a little warm water with the treacle or honey and bute and them mix into the feed, equapalazone bute in silver packet is not a nice taste but if you can swap for danilon in green packet it will make life a bit easier, my TB is nightmare for not eating but the danilion soaked in treacle does work, good luck hun xxx
