How to go about making ice lollies?

Hiya, thought I'd treat my girl. Think I get a tupperware, chop some apples and carrots then cover in apple juice or water?! Would hate for it to go wrong, does this sound about right?:):)
 
yes, what a nice idea - don't fill the juice right to the top as obviously it will expand as it freezes - tempted to do this myself now - thanks :D
 
I thought about doing this the other day but didn't as I thought the sudden cold may upset their tummies.....is this likely?

I suppose it's not much different to adding warm water to hard feeds when it's freezing in the winter which I do.

It is vastly different from adding warm water to feeds:eek: In that case you are attempting to bring the temperature of the feed to nearer that of the horse's stomach.

Thats what I was worried about! Had a look around, some people seemed to think the same but others said it shouldn't matter as it will only be a small treat and would be different if they were eating loads of it I think, does that make sense?:)
 
My pony has had ice creams from shops before in the summer and I have never had any problems! He quite enjoyed them :)
 
Jemima....are you saying not to do it then? As I said I haven't done yet as was concerned about the implications.

I do understand that it's different to feeding warm feeds, I think my comment wasn't written in the way it was intended...I meant it on the opposite. ie. I am concerned about feeding ice lollies because you don't want the stomach to get a shock!

I have seen horses have them before..why is it different to them having a cold bucket of water...they are only going to lick the lollies..and in this heat they will melt quickly...I am not putting veg or anything in mine though...just some frozen diluted fruit juice...they do love watermelons too and they're refreshing
 
I know zoos do frozen meat lollies for the likes of lions on hot days. I saw a fb page today and someone was moaning that when it melted there was water and fruit everywhere, so maybe put in a large skip to collect melted bits and not use too much water.
 
Last summer I did this- froze them in the big celebration sweets tubs, chopped apples/ carpets etc into them... Pony loved licking at them!!

Mine loves them, and we used to share out the rinds amongst the horses when I worked in Italy. The kids used to turn up with big bags of the stuff that they had "saved specially for pony X" :D

One of my ex-charges had a thing for orange flavoured ice lollies and they never did him any harm :)
 
I currently have two in the freezer waiting to go down to the ponies, obviously coblet loves them! I get a cheap tupawear tub, chop bananas, apples etc up and put apple squash in then freeze, he loves trying to get the treats out of it amend its a good way to keep my other one hydrated as I'm sure he doesn't drink enough!
 
By the time they get to the apples the juice would have melted to the ground, why dont you just freeze the chopped fruit, same thing, or just give them a nice cold lavender bath i am sure they would enjoy that more will no problems of colic etc
