My gelding is a nappy sod in the school. If he goes forward, it is at a snails pace until the light suddenly goes on and he works beautifully.
We go through the usual refusing to move, walking backwards etc.

If I hack out first though, its a different story and he goes straight in the arena and works lovely and forward, quick off the leg with no napping issues at all.

Its not always feasible to hack out first, so do you have any other ideas?

I know he is probably just being an akward bugger, but I did think that maybe he needs something to encourage him to 'think forward' before he can focus on schooling.

I had issues with my mate refusing to jump, then progressed to moving forward she would spin, go backwards, plant. I had advice to lunge her before I got on, keep her moving forwards without someone on the back. When in school always give them something to think about, randomly placed poles around the school, lots of circles etc. when my mare planted, went backwards learnt to get her to stand still until she was ready to go forwards or turn her instead of kicking her forwards. It takes time but you'll get there in the end! Hope this helps

Mine will plant in the school even after a hack! Longing first helps a bit. Lots of good ideas; still trying to crack this one!
