How to improve a scurfy coat

My mare is 22yrs old but is still in full work and very fit and healthy. She does however seem to have quite a scurfy coat, she is changing coats at the moment also but i just wondered if anyone had any tips for improving it.

I would imagine the best way long term is look at her feed - does she have any oil at the moment?

Short term (I look after a shetland who is very scurfy atm) I would try washing her over with slosh wash rather than a shampoo. It seems to be dislodging the worst of the scurf and lots of loose hair without having to bath her properly (hates baths!) and without her getting wet through.
 
She doesnt have any oil added to her feed but she currently gets fed Alfa A, Alfa A Balancer and Spillers High Fibre cubes. She should be gettting her correct amount of vits & minerals but no extra oil. What oil would work best?

I am just waiting to bath her as i think a lot of it is her losing her winter coat...come on sunshine!!

Lots of work with a rubber curry comb - in the short term the scurf will look worse as it is loosened up, however it should boost circualtion in the skin and stimulate oil production - ditto adding oil to feed too.
 
Any oil will do - you can get big 10 litre cans in Tesco fairly cheaply. you can feed quite a lot of it as well - up to 200ml depending on her size. I give mine 100ml a day throughout the winter for extra calories rather than his coat.
 
Second the rubber curry comb or massage suggestion. That's how I improved my old shettie's scurf, but he still gets a bit during a coat change.
 
Polytar, a shampoo that solved and incredibly scurfy greasy maned and coated horse. After the 2nd or 3rd wash the problem was solved and has never come back x
