hi its my first summer of havign my own horse and i have hit a stumbling block
the flies really go for his eyes - he does nto have an infection, just normal ey stuff collects in the corner of his eyes but the flies love it
I bought him fly face net - but he wont keep it on!!!!!!!!!!!!! he goes straight to the nearest tree and rubs it off
i cant put fly spray too near his eyes so im stumped at what to do - im now goign 3 times a day to wipe his eyes so he doesnt get infected
any ideas??????????????? how do you cope with flies on your horses eyes when the silly boy wont keep his fly net on xxx

Maybe try a fly fringe attached to a field safe headcollar? Or you can get the fly masks with loops to attach to a headcollar also. However, this failed with my gelding who we found with the mask ripped, headcollar in his mouth... don't ask how but we gave up! Going to try the fly fringe idea with him this year.

oh thanks sol - im off to my local tack shop in the morning because his eyes are gettign bad and im sick of hunting all over a very massive field for a loose fly mask that any of the horses could trip and fall on - last night i looked for two hours - im sure all the flipping horses were laughing at me lol - but i found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same problem, it's very difficult if they are determined. One of mine though will remove any flymask if it has ears, put one on that is ear-less and she will keep it on for ages. Weird maybe but perhaps worth a thought?

thank you castle and appy - tomorrow im off ot my tack shop and will ask for roll on fly repellant and a fly mask that just fastens round ears - ty - will let you know how we get on!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may prefer to get the fly repellant gel rather than the roll on. I just bought a big tub - can't remember the make but a good 'un. You just dip the end of a sponge in it and spread it all over the face, avoiding the eyes of course. Lasts ages. Worked a treat on my boy who can't have a face mask or a fly fringe.

thanks everyone - ive bought a fly fringe that fastens behind his ears and some fly gel specially for faces - fingers crossed they help xxx
