Apparently spring is around the corner- which means it's time to get my Highland back into work. That's not a problem at all, he loves it, but the problem is trying to make him look like a grey pony again, rather than a bog monster. I can just about deal with his coat and mane but his tail is a nightmare!

It's very long and his field is very boggy. Within the bogs are pools of peaty water which stain really nicely. On top of it all he only half heartedly lifts his tail when pooing so his tail also contains caked-on poo.

I can wash it, but within a few days it looks as bad as before. Has anyone any suggestions? I wondered about plaiting it and fastening it up polo pony style (and letting it out at night when he's in) but I don't know if this is good for them. I did see some 'tail bags' which looked a bit comical and again don't know if these are any good or safe for in the field (If there's something to get caught in- he'll find it!)

I'd be grateful for some advice! :-)

thanks for all the replies :-)
do the tail bags come off if they get caught in something? (as opposed to taking half the tail with it)
There's nothing particularly to get snagged on but just knowing my boy he'll find something!
