My back person has suggested that I lunge my boy to help his back by making him work"long and low".

I need to get someone to help me, as I have only tried once before with ned and it wasn't very successful!

What sort of equipment would I need? He is ridden in a Dr.Cook bitless bridle so can I lunge in a head collar or do I need a bridle with a bit?

He is a 13yr.old Arab!

Thank you for reading!

You need a lunging roller, lunging caveson, lunge line, lunge whip, and a training aid if you think you need one/can use it properly. Put boots on your horse as they tend to kick themselves when they are being lunged.

Once all the equipment is fitted, attatch the lunge line and lead your horse in a circle, them start letting out the line and push him away with the whip (gently) so he stays on the circle. You need to stand in the same place but turn around in a circle (on the spot) as your horse goes in a circle. Use your voice to ask him to walk, halt, trot, etc, and use the whip as a reminder. Have the lunge line in one hand and the whip in the other. Umm.. think that's it! Hope that helps :)

I would probably ask an instructor or experienced person to give you a hand the first time, they can show you how to put all the tack on and show you how it's done:)

Don't forget to keep the lunge line short enough - don't let it trail on the ground when you walk to the horse for example, gather it up. Don't wrap it around your hand, and wear gloves and a hat.

It's quite hard work for them, so don't overdo it.
