Any tips? I am using robust supplemtn at the min and cornuceresine and hoof hardener- they wud be brittle too. Any other tips and how long does it take ot see a difference? thanks!
Not sure what would make a huge difference in growth speed as fast as you want, but we have used cornucresine supplement before and found it very good, but unfortunately it wasn't overnight. I would try and prevent even the tiniest amount of wear, and would tape each foot (only along the edge, but not across the frog) in duct tape to prevent even the slightest amount of wear when turning out. Even fine sand will have an abrasive effect. I hope you get your shoes on soon, the waiting must be horrible!
We started feeding black sunflower seeds last autumn and our mare went from 8week shoes to 6 weeks as her feet were growing much faster.. Not sure if that was the reason, but it is certainly a coincidence!
Hi again, oh says cornucrescine for growth, and I swear by that cheap hoof oil that Lidl's sometimes sells for keeping the horn from breaking up. I only bought it for the little pots with the brushes in the lids, but it is magic. It has laurel oil in it, if that helps.
ohhh u have no idea how much it is cracking me up!!!! Im not happy! But ill def try the tape tonite- what type do u reckon? like xc bandage tape or duct tape?
where do u get the sunflower seeds from?
thanks so muhc- ill try anything altho YO may think i have finally lost the plot! she has her doubts already!!
Sounds daft but i started using pro pell plus last summer as a suppliment, one of the "side affects" for want of a better phrase was improved and quick foot growth. (But can make some horses abit fizzy)
Also have dry hooves and mix cod liver oil hoof hardener and cornucresine mixed together.
Just keeping moist with water is all the rage at the mo but never worked for me.
There is nothing you can put on horn to make it grow any faster!! You need good nutrition to create healthy hoof growth and you may not see the results for 12 months as thats how long it takes to grow from top to bottom.
My mare is on CalMag and has been for the last couple of months. The farrier has been today and for the first time in the 2 years I've had her he actually had some length to trim off!
I got mine from Countrywide, but I'm sure any agricultural stockist should have it. CalMag is a brand name, officially it's calcined magnesite i think. It's actually meant for feeding cattle and sheep in the spring to stop them from getting grass staggers. It cost me about £7 for a 20kg(might be 25!) sack, and I feed two tiny measures a day. I use the measure that comes in with Pink Powder.

Just silver duct tape from B&Q, it sticks fairly well, when you see how much wear is on the tape when horse comes back in, you will at least know that wasn't hoof you were loosing!!!
I get my sunflower seeds in Jollyes, a big sack (think 15kg) for about £8 and they last for ages, just a glass full split between two feeds. Maybe farrier can have another look at feet before the show, even if he only managed half the number of nails it would be something!
I second that spaniel. Using cornucresine will only make the new horn softer and therefore more likely to be damaged.
Another thing you can check is to that your horse frogs are in contact with the floor so getting enough pressure to pump the blood round and support the internal structures correctly. It won't matter what you feed or apply to the feet if the blood supply is inhibited.
The key thing, as my farrier says, is not the speed of growth but the quality. I have had mine on Farriers Formula for nearly a year now & have promised to continue doing so as I am starting to see the results now. I knew it would take time, but as others have said, it takes a year for the horn to grow down. There are no real miraculous quick fix cures IMO, but I would advise against the hoof hardener in this weather as it makes the hooves more brittle. My farrier actually told me this, and I have read a few posts on here that seem to agree. I use Kevin Bacons hoof dressing which is the only dressing I really rate that has definitely helped moisturise them.
