How to make leather boots more 'sticky'?

Hello

The boots I ride in day to day have suede patches which make them lovely and 'grippy', and I can wrap my legs nicely around my horse. My smart competition boots, on the other hand, are horrid shiney leather, and my lower leg just won't stay where I put it!

I am saving up for new boots with a suede inner panel, but in the meantime do any of you have any suggestions for innovative ways to make my current boots less slippy? We are off to do some dressage on Saturday, so any ideas that don't involve going out and buying a specialist product would be particularly useful.

I just use boot polish on mine which seems to make them a litle sticky

Spray on leather conditioner? Can't rem which brand mine is, but it's got an orange label. Quick spray on the saddle flaps, quick spray on the boots & they're nice & tacky.

My dear old (now departed) granny, used to swear by rubbing half a potato on the leather soles of new shoes so they weren't slippy. Haven't the foggiest if it works or not, something to do with the starch in the spud making it sticky. Might be worth a shot but just don't go too fast, or the spud might start cooking and then all you'll be able to think about is baked potato!
