How to make money working with horses?!

Have been looking into livery yard info on here and from all my calculations it is feasibly possible to make a small profit from liveries over the winter providing I can cancel policy in summer and that household ins will cover a building with change of use consent. But im talking just over £1000 profit from liveries and just over £1500 inc their lessons and livery. This is for a 15wk period. Dont get me wrong i want to do it for the experience and it works round my uni okay but that is not a lot of money for 15wks work!

I then looked at for the future profits from 13 liveries instead of 2 all year round I was still looking at profits of around £17000 per yr. Pre tax, pre paying for my horses feed, bedding competitions vet farrier horse insurance etc. Now even assuming I could cover those costs with the sale of a couple of horses each yr, £17000 per yr is not a lot of money! I would earn some extra for teaching In a worst case scenario around £2700. Bear in mind all my costs are worked on preowning facilities and land too! I would live at home for a while but realistically its not what i want to do long term and £17k a year is not something i could live off. Atm its looking like marry rich! As u can tell (posting at 3am) this worry has kept me up so I would love to be regaled with stories of people managing or planning to make a decent living off horses and how!
Uhhh horses ehh why do we bother be so much easier if I didnt adore them so! :(
 
You are correct that you will never make a decent living from this, even if using pre-owned [parents?] facility, I don't get 15 week liveries, but if you want some experience I suggest you go in to racing and go from there, the wages are all negotiated for you, it takes about two years to become a good work rider, and there are lots of opportunities for advancement.
The main centre is Newmarket and you need to be a good rider, tough and under 10 stone.
Other opportunities are available.
If you want short term go to work for a dealer, and see how hard it is to turn a penny into a pound!
At the moment the horse market is very unstable, and you need a lot of time and some regular income to bring on horses, difficult if you are in need of cash, and there are so many things that can go wrong, working on one horse at a time means all your eggs are in one basket, I would think about bringing on horses for others, not many people break their own in as it is time consuming and not everyone has the skill.
In the long term think about teaching children, good holidays and you only have to work Monday to Friday [cue tales of hard-working pedagogues]
 
The 15 wk livery is for this winter where i am currently based i only ideally have room for two liveries and they have a summer field of their own but want to winter with me for lessons and use of manege. Also worked out my costs and by them leaving in spring i can make haylage off the fields for winter again which saves me more money than if they stayed.
The 13 horses is looking to the future we plan on moving again to more like 30acres + and based on the info i have been given for two liveries i worked out the disappointing profits on 13.
Unfortunately at 6ft and happy at being over 10stone racing is out for me (i dislike dieting).
Mmm yeh i contemplated teaching could do 1 yrs extra at the end of my philosophy & politics course but it doesnt give me the time with horses that I need/want.
Its so tricky! I mean when we move we could find somewhere with a cottage for me on the land and then with no rent/mortgage £17k a yr isnt too bad but im not the type of person who enjoys continually relying on their parents even if i dont cost them anything ( i know several riders in their late 20s who are still financed by their parents! :( ). Ahh will let you know if I come across a huge money making scheme :p :D *tootles off to buy euromillions ticket*
 
Hmm renting out the yard thats a great idea! Id want fab facilities for my horses so could share them. Only prob is the risk involved regarding actually getting it rented! Thanks for the idea tho :)

As an OAP on £5K per annum , can I ask wt you are doing with £17K when you are "living at home"..but can t live on it!!!!
