How to measure stirrup irons?

Ok, I really ought to know this

Do you measure the iron across the tread, inside the upright bits? So just the gap?

What would you think is the average adult size, as I've measured mine tonight so I can buy some new ones, and the measurement seems smaller than I had expected!

Yes. I think the average is about 4 1/2 inches.

It depends what boots you wear.

I have a pair of 5 inch stirrups for winter, as my neoprene lined muck boots (the riding ones) are too wide for my normal 4 3/4 inch stirrups to be safe.

Good point! I just have ordinary jod boots for riding, if it's cold enough to wear thermal boots I tend to wimp out and lunge instead So hopefully the ones I just ordered will be fine!
