How to measure young horse for a bit??

I am planning on bitting my rising 2 year old in a couple of months and obviously want to be certain that I find him a good fitting bit to ensure he's as comfortable as possible.

I doubt I have any bits that will fit him at the moment so what's the best way to measure him?

Also, I am thinking of using the Neue Schule Starter bit - has anybody used this on their youngsters & what are your experiences (good and bad please!!)

Is a loose ring double jointed bit really the best place to start or is it better to go for a minimalistic approach and start with something like a mullen mouth eggbut?

I haven't tried the starter, but do use other NS bits and I really rate them. I would use a french link lozenge instead of a mullen mouth bit as the bit is likely to fit more comfortably in the mouth and allow movement to let the horse still move its tongue to swallow - all of which will make it a much calmer and less stressful introduction to bits.

To measure his mouth I would find a narrow piece of hose with two plaiting bands wrapped on. One at either end of a short (say 6 inches) piece. Just pop it in his mouth and you can slide the plaiting bands to where the bit should end on either side. The bands will stay put so when you take it out of his mouth again you can just measure between the two. Bobs your uncle!
