how to pay for a horse? (and transport in cheshire)!

ok im sorry for all the thread but i have so much different things to ask :p

(i hope this is a learning curve for others too lol)!

when you have found "the one", which im not 100% sure im going to get vetted...? how do you pay for it? i dont particularly want to walk round with over a thousand pounds in cash? nor wait for a cheque to clear - is there another way?

also any horse transporters in cheshire??? i am 22, so could self drive?

p.s i havent found "the one" yet.... i just have a few local viewings lined up. :)
 
One thing I would ask before you attempt self drive is do you class C1 on licence? I missed having my C1 on my licence by 6weeks back in 98 :( So I need to do my test.
I would also look at local transport companies, I had a 17.2 gelding transported 100miles for £80. Which is pretty good (or at least we thought so at the time lol) Get a transport company from near where the horse is and then you don't need to pay for both ends of the journey.

thanks chelle - yeah definately.

i thought i could drive under 3.5tons and one of them "on a 17 year olds lisence" type box?

id rather not - would much rather pay someone to transport a horse i buy but just a thought in case i cant find anyone.
 
Depending on your age, they might not insure you on a hire box, think it's over 25.

Payment - I transferred money via internet banking and she checked her balance before I picked horse up. I gave the part I could withdraw in a day (£500) in cash.

Do Blue Rose transport cover Chershire, they are very good, they're based in Lancs and have been around for years.
 
Hi, ive always paid for my horses cash, i think its the best way, no chance of anybody taking your money then not having the horse, you hand the cash over you take the horse. To be honest mist sellers prefer cash too.
If you type in horseboxes to rent in your area in google loads will come up, some will hav reviews i like to go with thoses ones, at 23 you could drive one under 3.5 tonnes but most wont insure under 25s and also if you havent driven a lorry yet, they day you pick your horse up might not the best day to start. Would recommend a company who do it for you, word of mouths the best way, ask the YO where your going to keep your horse (or she may be able to it for you) or ask the person who you buy from, again they may be able to do it for you or be able to recommend .

Cash every time or bank transfer

Cheques can bounce, banker's drafts can be forged - I don't think you'll find many people who'll accept either nowadays

Friend sold a Jeep Cherokee a couple of years ago for £10,000 - was paid with a banker's draft, put it in the bank, their bank accepted it - no funds available - it was a forgery - even fooled the bank :O
 
Id pay cash or if you really dont want to then give a decent deposit and do a chaps transfer.
As for transport, Boothroyden Horse Transport are really good.

Unless you have a very wide knowledge & experience of horses, ailments etc then I would certainly have a horse vetted. As to whether you have 2 or 5 stage vetting is up to you but you could end up with a walking vet bill if you aren't very careful. Sorry...just don't want you to throw your money away. ;)
 
You will also struggle to insure a horse that hasn't been vetted. My new policy with NFU for my first horse 2 years ago required a 5 stage vetting - of course I was going to get one done anyway as I'm no expert!

Where r u going to keep the horse? My livery yard picked my horse up for me, and charged me mileage only. It is in their interests to do this as they are gaining a new customer!
 
Whatever you use (and cash is preference unless you paid a week in advance and they banked a cheque while still holding onto horse and I guess you'd be too impatient for that!) Do make sure YOU GET A RECEIPT THAT IS SIGNED BY SELLER ALONG WITH ALL THEIR CONTACT DETAILS - THAT YOU KNOW TO BE TRUE. It must state the age and description of the horse, passport society and number, any bad habits (bad to show/clip, dodgy loader etc) any scars, anything that marks the horse out TBH. You both need a copy signed and dated by the other.
If you don't have anyone experienced to take with you, then yes, even for a cheapish horse, I'd have it vetted if you're not experienced enough.
 
I work in bank and in view of the afore mentioned problems with cheques clearing,and bank drafts potentially being forged, I would recommend that you pay a deposit by cheque. Ask the seller to not bank it, however.
Then, on the day you are collecting the horse, take the seller with you, to your bank's local branch, whereby you can get a bank draft for full purchase price made out to the vendor with them present so they know it is genuine. You hang onto it until you have actually got to the seller's premises and can then hand it over once you are certain you will take ownership of the horse.Don't forget to have your deposit cheque handed back to you.
You will need in date and valid passport/driving licence for the bankers draft.
Hope this helps. Its much safer than carrying cash too!!

i will have the horse vetted, even if its only a 2 stage....as it will give me a few more days anyhow to get stable ready and money organised :)

im going to the bank on monday i think and start withdrawing £400 a time.... so then i have it available and dont have to panic about money when ive found "the one".. :)

in fact i may even go tomorow and draw the lot out as i have afriend with me id feel better that way lol!

would i have to ring up in advance to withdraw upto £1500??
 
You'd be better off keeping your money in a safe place (i.e. the bank) then withdrawing the whole lot when you need it, it could take you weeks/months to find a horse! You only need to call up before you go in and let them know how much you want to take out.

you just need £50 or £100. take it with you when you view a horse and leave it as a deposit on the one you choose. get a reciept.:)
then when you collect the horse take the ballance in cash.
i went to see a horse 2 weeks ago, didnt leave a deposit due to not being able to agree on a price. agreed on price 2 days later and then turned up with cash and the trailer.
another 230 mile round trip.:eek:
if i ever buy another horse its got to be local.;)

yep im planning to take money with me on the next viewing ive lined up :o (tomorow).

seller came accross very genuine, so just hope the horse lives upto everything on paper and she will be perfect.

then to sort out the vetting.... hoping they can do that asap lol!... as soon as i have my heart set on a horse thats it lol!!

im spending sunday finding another yard - i have a stable at a comp yard but i really want to be able to take my dog down now and again if needed.
