Wanted to make this thread to get major tips. Not got me a horse at the moment so in between lessons all i can do is try and think over what i have been told and put a plan in action for next time. Is there any tips i can have to practice at home? I need to work on core strength, balance, straightness and leg strength. I haven't got a ball thing but i can get one. Any other tips welcome :)

Pilates is good. There are special exercises for riders. Also maybe try reading books /dvds like Mary wanless etc. Cardiovascular exercise is always good too :)

To answer your question though there is really no substitute for time riding unfortunately. All the off horses exercises just help you use your body better when you ride but they won't make you a good rider as such.

What about one of those horse exercise things you can get for about 400 quid. Cheaper than keeping a horse. Never used one but saw one for sale the other day!

haha the rider things? Apparently they are quite good yes.

Might all be irrelevant, just been offered a part loan on a friends horse!

If you have a desk job, get a Swiss ball instead of a chair - and as you sit there you can be balancing, exercising your core and preventing back problems. Try sitting like you would on a horse, and seeing if you can lift your feet a tiny bit off the floor and stay balanced.

Apparently, the horse exercise things really don't mimic the movement of the horse very well but I guess they may help a bit. Loan sounds like the way forward :)

They are also brilliant when you are watching telly - much better for you than a sofa!! Improve your core strength and balance no end, which will, in turn help to improve riding.
