My young chap is short coupled with long legs ( he is 17.2 ) as he is young he is a little on forehand also, and all these result in him pulling off his front shoes with his back shoes on a weekly basis!

My farrier has just come back from the olympics, and is a well known remedial farrier who does regularly write for h@h suffice to say has a reputation for being very good.
I will be asking him if there is anything else we can do, however does anyone know of any other trick that may prevent him pulling his shoes off.

He is currently turned out in overreach boots that touch the ground I have tried both woof wear kevlar, and mark todd compitition, and neither have managed to keep his shoes on.

He usually loses then overnight in the field.

any other suggestions? thanks

pro hoof formuala?

and trying to google it , cannot find it, who makes it ? am willing to give anything a try thanks
( even stabling at night if I absolutely have to, except I cannot stable 24 hours )

he has to wear shoes and probably back shoes as without he goes sore on the roads and on the stoney track that leads to his field. ( he went unshod before he was broken in and used to poter )

Also he will be affiliated eventing next year so will require stud holes

My farrier is a genius and thus horse has 'special shoes'. They have 3 toe clips on the front - one in the middle and one on each side. And 3 on the back- two on the outside and one on the inside. They look a bit funny bit she was losing a show each week last summer and now its much less often. Im on a yard so farrier also tightens shoes when he comes to do others if they are starting to come loose and break foot up.

I also feed limestone flour and biotin and wear over reach boots if wet. (There was a good thread on here last month about horses pulling shoes off in mud coz they take longer pulling front feet out). Im also v. careful with ground and turn out e.t.c. and use effol LOADS!! Good luck, its frustrating and expensive when they keep losing blimin shoes!

hot shoeing - much better

hoof first is the best for biotin i think (reccomended by farrier), coruncresine, keep horse in at night as it sounds like he gallops at night which is the most possible way of loosing a shoe (other than fairies taking it off to play games

)

other than that, may be imprint shoes or some sort of gel shoe?

he does not gallop at night, as far as I can see, the problem can occur at walk!
Or has done when ridden, which he does in the day as well.

I used to use cornuncrescine however find kevin bacon much better, and we already hot shoe.

cannot see imprint or gel shoes will help as he treds on his shoes with his hindlegs, it is not the nails or even poor hoof quality causing the shoe to fall off, it is th wopping great foot standing on it.
accourding to the farrier he has good feet. However to make sure I have the naf pro feet ordered.

AS I have said I will have a word with the farrier, re back shoes on front, shorter toes etc.

Am going to try duck tape too, like the showjumpers use.

thanks

I use a product called Equicast and although it is used to promote healthy hoof growth they can be used over shoes. It will cover the entire shoe so he shouldn't catch it with his hind legs and perhaps use over reach boots aswell.
Hope you find something that works.
