How to prevent rub marks on sensitive horses/coat changing time of year

Hi there, my horse gets rub marks during coat changing season where the reins sit and also on his sides where my leg makes contact.

Although the skin isn’t sore, the bald patches look unsightly. I previously rode in suede chaps and thought this was the cause, so last year I bought leather chaps. Although it has worked to a point, unfortunately the zip on the chaps is exposed and clearly I stick my toe out on the right foot more than the other and funnily enough, a bald spot has appeared.

To help, I clip him and have left a square on his sides, I’m using lotions for hair regrowth and have made a padded leg guard 🙈 to cover the zip on my right leg while I’m trying to re-educate it to point forward, but looking ahead I’m after something to act as a preventative measure as clearly he is sensitive at coat changing times. The hair grows back and for the rest of the year he’s fine.

Can anyone recommend any ideas?

also to add, I’ve made fleece rein guards this year which seem to have solved that problem 🙌

I rubbed my horse’s hair which was down to my boots. I’d been lazy and not put chaps on and the tag at the back of the boot rubbed him. I got a belly band which goes round the horse behind the saddle and that helped clear it. Changed boots and fine since. Was quite expensive but needed to get it sorted.

One of mine is terrible shoulders are worse I use a silky bib but it rubs above it, I do put that naf hair serum stuff on the baldy bits to try and make it slippery I think it helps a bit and it smells nice so I like it.

Pure coconut oil is meant to help hair grow but it's solid form has to be melted this time of year and I forget to do it so it's not been successful, mtg can also help I use that mainly on the mane and tail but you can use it on the body.

So glad its not just me! Mine gets rubbed where my leg sits (worse with my left leg apparently). Even though I never ride in spurs I left spur patches when I clipped which helped a lot but can still see a bald patch on the one side starting. Interested to see the belly band comments will look into that! They always grown back fine come spring but unsightly now and I feel it looks like I don't know how to use my leg properly 😬

Yes, I think for me a belly band when the coat changing seasons start will work a treat 🙌
