As above really.

My horse is a 16hh Trakehner & I've decided to get some tendon boots as he'll be jumping regularly & jumps like a stag. The first pair I bought (Premier Equine) were too long -yes I could work that out for myself. They cut into the back of the knee.
I've got some Equilibrium Tri-zone (medium) instead & they are the correct length down the cannon bone, but they dont seem to come very far forward (if that makes sense). From the sideways view the boots protect about 1/2 the width of the cannon bone. The straps do up fine but is this enough protection?

How far round does the boot need to come to really act as protection & what would mine new boots be acceptable?

Usually tendon boots should come up to the front of the cannon bone so all of the side of the leg is covered and the front is showing, i'm guessing that you've got open fronted ones, I'm not sure but it sounds as if they are quite small although a tendon boots isnt really for protection more for support of the tendon so if the strap does up it should be ok as long as its not too tight!

I agress with Samps, but i think it's worth checking out a number of different brands. I have some from Hampa Pro and find that they do the the same as you have described in that they don't come very far forward around the leg, however i have another pair from Decathalon horse section and they are a really good fit and are much more generous fit width wise.

Good luck and happy booting!
