My mare came back off full loan just over a month ago like a skeleton, I have wormed her with the 5 day guard had her teeth done . but no weight is gaining.
Im feeding her on pasture mix , calm & condition, propell plus and chaff.
Any ideas?

Shredded Sugar-beet is brill ..... NOTE SHREDDED ..... it stays in their digestive system longer so they get more out of it and they feel satisfied for longer and they get all the vits and mins out of it . Also I feed Dengie Hi-Fi ( the brown one , full calories ! ) , those are the only 2 things I feed (apart from ad-lib hay/haylage) and they bloom all through the year ! Mixes etc dont offer alot of long term calories , they give a quick buzz but nothing to put weight on . And its a cheap feed and you can feed loads of it and you dont have to scrape them off the ceiling !

My old boy lost a lot of weight over winter. Its taken ages to find a feed that actually works. I feed him 1.5 scoops(before it's soaked) Calm and condition and 2ish scoops Alfa a oil. He gets this 3 x daily. It took a while for the weight to start going back on but when it did, there was no stopping it. I also have him on a gerneral vit and mineral supplement.

Inherited 18 year old thoroughbred this winter and was concerned about his weight, used alfabeet, dengie and bailey's no 4 topline cubes and the difference was amazing. He's got lots of lovely grass at the mo but still has topline everyday and he's not looking too bad for an old boy.

Hi, I sent a similar query to Allen and Page and got a reply which might help:
I was feeding my 16.2hh, KWPN, 550kg in moderate work
He is being fed 2 feeds of:
1 standard scoop Calm & Condition
1 standard scoop Alfa-A Oil
Feedmark Steady Up
Feedmark Original Balancer - about to be changed to Blue Chip Original.
A full haylage net overnight and if given two he doesn't eat it all. During the day he has grass.
I wanted to know what I could add if he was losing weight as I couldn't increase the volume of the feed as their tummy is only the size of a rugby ball.

Their response was:
As Calm & Condition is a fully balanced feed, as long as you are feeding more than 2kgs per day this will provide a full balance of all the essential vitamins and minerals without the need for additional balancers.
The amount of Calm & Condition you are feeding seems like an appropriate amount if the scoop of Calm & Condition you are referring to is a round Stubbs scoop of the pellets (dry weight before the water is added) which weighs approximately 1.5kgs. This amount of Calm & Condition plus the Alfa A Oil is about the maximum volume of feed I would want to see a horse fed per meal so I wouldn't recommend adding an extra feed. What you can do is to add some extra oil to Tenco's feed. Linseed oil is an excellent source of Omega 3 oils, and like any oil, is a concentrated source of calories, that can provide a boost to any diet without the need to feed extra concentrate feed. A horse of Tenco's size could have a full coffee mug of linseed oil per day, this should be introduced gradually and gradually increased over the course of a few weeks. If you feed the maximum amount of extra oil I would recommend adding in a Vitamin E supplement to act as an anti-oxidant against the effects of the oil digestion.

Hope it helps!
