He needs to work in a round outline, at first do it for short sessions then let him stretch but if on the road make sure you are in control .If you have some tracks to work on then do some leg yielding which will get him softer. If on tracks and quiet roads you could do some shoulder fore but really still concentrate on the road situation. If you are passing something your horse might shy at it is always best to go past inright shoulder fore but be careful not to make him one sided.

As I say do it for short periods and build it up ,not too much too soon

thank you, only on the road for 3 mins then on the pentland hills & hours of off road hacking, got lots of long paths so will get a chance to do the stuff you posted

yes round outline, there are no short cuts.how does he go?sometimes walk proper can be v hard work for you.would be nice to keep pictorial record of progress.and of course no reason why this cant be done without a school.

he can work in a outline but finds it hard work at the moment, normally it takes a good 30 mins of warming up before he goes willingly, normally he has his head high up

exercise can do strange things-when my friend trained for london marathon her best leather tall boots didnt fit her any more round her larger calves.they returned quick after when she stopped her running.

Im going throught the same at the moment with my horse...he has a very weedy neck! so i will also be listening for advise too, lol

Like yours he always used to carry his head very high. Ive had him for 8 months now and he is now begining to work in a much better outline

If hes anything like my horse he stays in an outline in walk but then goes back to being a girrafe when asked for trot unless he has been worked for 20-30mins. so whats worked for me is just stickickg to a long countryside walk with him working in a correct outline.without bothering to much with trotting or school movements. your neddy hopefully wont find it such hard work to stay in an outline the more he works.

With mine i can tell hes being working correctly is that when i let him have a long rein (or even when not) he will often stretch and retract his neck (probs because the muscles are aching slightly?)

sorry reading my post back ive not really helped you at all

A lot of people have said about riding him in an outline. But also just riding him correctly in to a contact will help tremendously.

But it may also be worth having his saddle checked to ensure that the lack of muscle isn't something to do with a poorly fitting saddle.
